Surprising & Under-the-Radar
An AI Agent Now Runs a Telescope Listening for Aliens
Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute put an AI agent in charge of the Allen Telescope Array in California. From one plain-English request it points, calibrates and plots, and the team reports the first real-time AI detection of a pulsar, the spinning star in the Crab Nebula. (Oct 31)
The US Census Now Asks Businesses About "Super Intelligence"
Since October 19, the Census Bureau's business survey asks whether firms used "Super Intelligence or SI (formerly referred to as Artificial Intelligence or AI)", following a September 29 executive order that renamed AI for federal agencies. That survey of about 200,000 businesses is one of the best measures of AI adoption, and the new wording may muddy it. (Nov 2)
A Gene-Hunting AI Scored Better When Given No Evidence
Researchers built a careful AI pipeline to find which genes cause diseases. Given only the disease and a shuffled gene list, it scored 0.864, higher than the 0.793 it scored with all its gathered evidence, which suggests its "research" mostly repeated what it had memorized. (Nov 3)
World of Warcraft's Developer Community Grew 50-Fold, Junk Included
Two years ago about 200 developers used the Warcraft Logs data service, two to four of them abusive. Now about 10,000 do, and roughly 1,000 misbehave, as AI coding tools let anyone build add-ons. (Nov 4)
A Chinese AI Lab Reportedly Tried to Rent Nvidia Chips in Europe
Moonshot AI, maker of the Kimi models, held talks to rent Nvidia's newest chips from European cloud firms, one source saying at 30% to 50% more upfront. US rules block shipping those chips to China but say little about renting them abroad, and a bill to close the gap has stalled. (Nov 5)
An AI Wrote Better Robot Instructions Than Human Experts
In Ai2's ToyBlocks practice world, Claude Opus 5.5 directed a robot arm through block-spelling puzzles. When the AI wrote its own descriptions of the robot's skills from experiments, success rose from 24% to 63%; instructions written by human experts reached only 36%. (Nov 6)

MEMENTO: Learning Context Management for Long Context Processing Agents
What it claims: Instead of loading a whole book into a huge AI memory, a small model can learn to manage its own memory by regularly replacing its history with notes it writes for itself. The authors taught Alibaba's Qwen3-8B this note-taking in two steps. First they showed it worked examples. Then they trained it with rewards for correct answers, useful notes and honest confidence.
Key finding: On four tests of questions about books of up to 2.5 million tokens, accuracy rose from 36.9% to 67.8%, while the model never held more than 20,000 tokens at once. In the same setup a GPT-5.5 agent scored 13.1%, and running it on the full test set cost $2,606, versus $48 for MEMENTO, about a 54th of the price. MEMENTO also nearly matched an agent built on GLM-5.3, a model roughly 100 times larger, at a ninth of the cost.
Why practitioners should care: For agents that work through very long documents or long-running jobs, teaching a small model to take good notes can beat paying for a giant memory on a top model, and it keeps cost and speed steady. The paper does not link or promise a code or model release, so treat it as a design pattern to test, not a download.
Last Week's Watchlist
What to Watch Next Week
Whether Anthropic Finally Sets a Price Range
A price range would show whether buyers' talk of $1 trillion to $1.3 trillion holds after the selloff (CNBC); another week of blanks would suggest the timing is slipping.
Whether Inkling 2 Small's Free Weights Arrive
On time, it would put a near-top model with documented early misbehavior into anyone's hands; a delay would suggest the outside testers found something (VentureBeat).
Whether GPT-6.2 Ships, and Whether It Fixes Astra's Safety Gap
A new flagship would be the first test of whether OpenAI can close the safety-work gap it disclosed; its report does not say whether the next model fixes it (OpenAI Alignment).
Whether the AI Selloff Steadies Before Nvidia Reports
A calmer week would make Thursday look like a reset; further falls would weigh on Anthropic's pricing and on chip-rental firms that depend on new data centers (Nikkei Asia).
What Faded
Corrections & Updates
Updated since the dailies. Postman's issue was first opened on October 25, revived on Hacker News this week and closed on November 5 with a promise of clearer opt-in. Revolut moved from GLM-5.1 to GLM-5.3 and still uses Claude Code, Codex and Gemini for some work. The shared "don't train on me" signal is an individual proposal with no formal standing yet, and covers training only. Brave had not responded publicly to the newspapers' suits by Friday. OpenAI's $11 billion was first reported on October 31; Bloomberg's November 6 report confirmed it, and OpenAI has not commented. GPT-6.2 had not shipped by Friday evening.
Dated or re-run claims. The Brazilian lawyers' white-text prompt-injection fine dates from a May ruling, and the Luxembourg "chatbot trauma" study is a revision of a December 2025 paper, so we left both out. The "super intelligence" executive order was signed September 29; only the Census wording and earnings-call echoes were new. Orgvue's 32% rehiring figure for AI layoffs is from a March report. Microsoft's buyout offer to about 60,000 staff was covered last week and is not counted again.
Stories the dailies missed. The Binance theft through an internal AI tool, the operating loss and cancellable commitments in Anthropic's amended filing, the 1.5x to 2.8x range in METR's report, Astra's behavior in real internal use, and the selloff's spread to Asian markets were found during this week's re-check and are included above.
Product Hunt figures. Product Hunt blocked command-line checks, but every product page loaded through a browser fetch on Friday, so the upvotes shown are the latest scores, not the dailies' mid-launch snapshots. No daily covered Friday's launches.
