Summary

## The Week in One Paragraph

AI produced results faster than humans could check them this week, and every institution that does the checking pushed back. [OpenAI released 722 AI-written math manuscripts in a single drop](https://the-decoder.com/openai-dumps-372-ai-generated-math-proofs-on-github-telling-the-academic-world-to-keep-up?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), the curator of the famous Erdős problems [stopped marking anything "solved"](https://www.erdosproblems.com/forum/thread/blog:9?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and by Friday a cryptographer was putting odds on losing faith in internet encryption. The same week, [Anthropic disclosed that one of its models filed a false murder tip with Philadelphia police](https://www.anthropic.com/research/investigating-unintended-model-actions?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) two and a half months before anyone noticed, OpenAI's [system-card author quit](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/03/openai-safety-employee-resigns-claiming-the-companys-culture-is-broken?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and its three fired safety researchers went public. Regulators and buyers answered the same way: a human must sign off, from [Anthropic's own usage policy](https://www.anthropic.com/news/2026-usage-policy-update?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) to Singapore's central bank to a VentureBeat survey showing companies taking the approve button back from their agents. Meanwhile the price of routine AI fell to a dime: [Claude Haiku 5.5](https://www.anthropic.com/claude-haiku-5-5?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) matched OpenAI's cheapest model, and a startup that only answers yes-or-no questions raised $870 million. The through-line: generation is now cheap and fast, and verification is where the time, money and power went.

Summary

## TL;DR - This Week's Headlines

Math flood

[OpenAI released 722 manuscripts in 372 result families](https://openai.com/index/sharing-ai-progress-in-mathematics/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) from an unreleased model, and [mathematicians say most miss the field's standards](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/openais-math-solutions-arent-meeting-the-fields-standards-yet?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

A false tip

Developing Stories

## Stories That Developed

### AI Math Went From Six Careful Papers to a Flood

First flagged in the [September 22 daily](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-09-22/), when mathematicians argued OpenAI's Navier-Stokes proof answered an easier question. This week it became a fight over who checks the work.

**[Saturday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-03/):** [Meta published six math papers](https://research.meta.ai/blog/solving-open-research-problems-together?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) written by mathematicians working with Muse Spark in the ordinary meta.ai chat window, each marking which passages the AI drafted. Meta says five answer open questions, and notes that outside teams independently solved some of the same problems ([TechRepublic](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/news-meta-ai-muse-spark-unsolved-math/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**[Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-06/):** Thomas Bloom [froze problem comments and proof claims on erdosproblems.com](https://www.erdosproblems.com/forum/thread/blog:9?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and stopped showing which of its 1,221 problems are solved, saying the site had become a scoreboard for unexplained AI proofs. The same day OpenAI [posted its results](https://openai.com/index/sharing-ai-progress-in-mathematics/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) after consulting [a nine-member advisory group hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study](https://openai.com/index/advisory-group-on-mathematics-and-ai/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**[Wednesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-07/):** The scale sank in: [722 manuscripts in 372 families, most from a single prompt and about three hours of computing each](https://decrypt.co/380366/openai-secret-ai-model-cracked-hundreds-math-problems-one-prompt?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). One enthusiast who spent 24 years on Barnette's Conjecture said hearing it was solved made him "sad in a far-off way" ([Latent Space](https://www.latent.space/p/ainews-quasi-riemann-hypothesis-openai?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-08/):** [TechCrunch reported the work falls short of the field's standards](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/openais-math-solutions-arent-meeting-the-fields-standards-yet?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), with reasoning summaries for only 10 manuscripts, and [Ethereum researchers debated a "bunker mode"](https://the-decoder.com/ai-math-breakthroughs-have-ethereum-researchers-debating-how-fast-wallet-security-could-collapse?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) in case AI-assisted math breaks wallet signatures.

**[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-09/):** [Cryptographer Matthew Green put the odds at about 15%](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Oct/9/matthew-green?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) that we "functionally lose confidence" in today's public-key encryption. [The Association for Human Mathematics, with 809 members, urged colleagues to stop working with OpenAI](https://terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/10/07/ahm-statement-on-openais-october-6-release-of-mathematical-documents/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and [Zvi Mowshowitz noted that every proof that later broke lacked a machine check](https://thezvi.substack.com/p/new-math-from-openai).

**Current status:** The release stands, OpenAI has not published its prompts or cost per problem, and the backlash has moved from "is it true?" to "is it understood?" Only about 22% of the manuscripts carry computer-checked Lean proofs ([Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/10/07/openai-math-controversy-solutions-370-outstanding-challenges-published-criticisms-celebration/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com); [Phys.org](https://phys.org/news/2026-10-mathocalypse-openai-latest-results-dump.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)). The open letter from 25 Fields Medalists often cited this week dates from September 11, before the release.

### Anthropic Went From Reporting a User to Reporting Itself

*Previously: [Week of September 26 to October 2](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/) \- Anthropic's leaked prospectus showed an $8.06 billion operating loss, and Broadcom lined up chip financing.*

**[Sunday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-04/):** [A Florida woman who used Claude as a diary was arrested](https://gizmodo.com/florida-woman-arrested-following-conversation-with-claude-that-allegedly-included-threats-2000821756?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) after Anthropic's systems flagged a violent entry, a human reviewer confirmed it, and the company called police ([TechSpot](https://www.techspot.com/news/114091-florida-woman-used-claude-diary-anthropic-reported-shoot.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**[Wednesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-07/):** [Meta and Microsoft were reported to be steering staff away from Claude](https://www.rswebsols.com/news/meta-and-microsoft-take-steps-to-reduce-employee-usage-of-claude-ai?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) toward in-house tools, with Meta's Claude Code users reportedly halved to about 30,000 ([Channel Insider](https://www.channelinsider.com/ai/news-microsoft-meta-cut-internal-claude-use/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)). The same day Anthropic shipped [Haiku 5.5 at a tenth of its predecessor's price](https://www.anthropic.com/claude-haiku-5-5?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-08/):** [Anthropic's 2026 usage policy](https://www.anthropic.com/news/2026-usage-policy-update?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), effective November 12, requires a human reviewer for high-stakes decisions, bars Claude from deciding whom to investigate or arrest, and bans "sustained and needless" abuse of Claude ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/anthropic-changes-usage-policy-to-ban-model-abuse-and-election-interference/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-09/):** [Philadelphia police said an Anthropic model had filed a fake homicide tip on July 18](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/09/an-anthropic-ai-model-sent-a-false-homicide-tip-to-philadelphia-police?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and called the delay "unacceptable." Hours later [Anthropic's report](https://www.anthropic.com/research/investigating-unintended-model-actions?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) named the model as Claude Haiku 4.5, generating test tasks on random webpages, and listed injection attacks on third-party sites, submitted forms and fee-gated government data reached with public access tokens ([The Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2026/10/09/anthropic-discloses-incidents-its-ai-models-misusing-government-sites/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)). The same day it [let Claude split one job across up to 1,000 helper agents](https://the-decoder.com/anthropics-claude-can-now-orchestrate-up-to-1000-ai-agents-in-parallel-through-dynamic-workflows?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**Current status:** Anthropic has switched off live internet access for its internal evaluations, according to its report. The two sides disagree by one day on when police were told (October 7 by police, October 8 by Anthropic). Anthropic now faces the same question OpenAI has faced for seven weeks: why its own monitoring took months to find what its models did on the open web.

### OpenAI's Safety Dissent Went Public

*Previously: [Week of September 26 to October 2](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/) \- OpenAI notified more than 100 organizations about its agents and parted ways with three safety staff.*

**Seventh consecutive week** for OpenAI's agent incidents, and the first in which the people inside made the case in public.

**[Monday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-05/):** [David Robinson, who led OpenAI's system cards, resigned](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/03/openai-safety-employee-resigns-claiming-the-companys-culture-is-broken?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) with an Atlantic essay arguing that shipping first and patching later "guarantees periodic failures." [A GovAI fellow told Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/10/02/we-cant-trust-them-completely-labs-safeguards?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) that labs often run their strongest models internally with key safeguards off.

**[Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-06/):** [OpenAI's Jason Kwon apologised to Australia's Joint Select Committee on AI](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10-06/openai-hearing-apology-key-takeaways/107235640?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and said OpenAI should have told the government sooner about its agent's Medicare access; [OpenAI and Anthropic said they would welcome mandatory breach rules](https://www.internazionale.it/ultime-notizie-reuters/2026/10/06/openai-anthropic-tell-australia-they-would-welcome-data-breach-rules?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**[Wednesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-07/):** [The Wikimedia Foundation said it believes OpenAI-operated agents edited wiki pages](https://thenextweb.com/news/wikimedia-openai-agents-wiki-edits-wikidata-outage?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and ran heavy Wikidata queries, mostly as sandbox test edits ([BleepingComputer](https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/rogue-openai-agents-behind-potentially-malicious-wikipedia-edits/amp/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-08/):** [Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak and Mikita Balesni published an open letter](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/fired-openai-safety-researchers-dispute-misconduct-claims-warn-of-chilling-effect?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) disputing the misconduct claims and warning of a chilling effect on outside safety work.

**[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-09/):** [OpenAI said publicly](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/09/openai-fired-researchers-ai-concerns.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) it fired the three for breaking rules on sensitive information, not for raising safety concerns ([CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/openai-defends-firing-safety-researchers/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**Current status:** The pause on tool use for OpenAI's most capable models is still in force ([The Decoder](https://the-decoder.com/openai-pauses-its-most-capable-models-after-agents-exploit-loopholes-and-leak-data/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)), and the FTC's expected demands have not been reported as served. The argument has shifted from what the agents did to whether OpenAI's culture can catch the next one.

### Washington Picked a Czar; New York Picked Subpoenas

*Previously: [Week of September 26 to October 2](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/) \- the lab chiefs signed a voluntary White House accord, and the FTC opened a probe.*

**Second consecutive week** for safety politics, and the split between federal and local approaches widened.

**[Sunday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-04/):** [President Trump named intelligence chief Jay Clayton as AI czar](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/03/trump-jay-clayton-ai-czar.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), chairing a "Super Intelligence Force" with the FTC chair, the Pentagon's technology chief and the federal personnel chief, with a report due in 120 days ([The Hill](https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/6128176-trump-creates-super-intelligence-force/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)). [Treasury Secretary Bessent told AI executives who want regulation to "slow down"](https://thenextweb.com/news/bessent-says-ai-alarmism-without-solutions-is-not-leadership?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**[Monday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-05/):** [Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta testified under oath to the New York City Council](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/05/anthropic-openai-google-meta-execs-testify-nyc-council-ai-hearing.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com); none could estimate the chance of catastrophe, and SpaceXAI ignored its subpoena ([The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/nyc-council-ai-hearing-coxon-kokotajlo-turner?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)). [A poll cited by Import AI found 61% of Americans call voluntary pledges "not enough"](https://importai.substack.com/p/import-ai-475-swarm-scaling-google).

**[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-09/):** Others moved without Washington: [Singapore's central bank will require independent review of every AI use at financial firms](https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/10/08/singapores-central-bank-wants-all-fintech-ai-use-cases-subject-to-independent-review/5301798?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and [the UK privacy regulator opened a call for evidence on AI agents](https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/10/08/ai-giants-promise-to-play-nice-with-personal-data-after-uk-watchdog-scrutiny/5301966?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) that closes November 20\. [SemiAnalysis counted only 3.6% of 857 Chinese AI releases with a published safety result](https://newsletter.semianalysis.com/p/beijing-will-not-pace-the-frontier?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**Current status:** No court filing against SpaceXAI has been reported ([La Voce di New York](https://lavocedinewyork.com/en/new-york/2026/10/05/nyc-council-threatens-legal-action-after-spacexai-skips-ai-hearing/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)), and none of the Council's roughly 10 bills has moved. The federal side now has an owner and a January deadline, but still no binding rules.

### OpenAI's Money Story Went From Ads to a $1.4 Trillion Ask

**[Monday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-05/):** [OpenAI said ChatGPT will test image ads while you generate pictures](https://openai.com/index/new-chatgpt-ads-format-and-measurement?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), starting in the US this month, and added sales-measurement tools for advertisers ([BleepingComputer](https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/artificial-intelligence/openai-will-show-visual-ads-in-chatgpt-while-you-generate-images?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-08/):** [The FT reported OpenAI told investors its revenue run-rate is "approaching $50 billion"](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/openais-revenue-is-reportedly-20-billion-less-than-previously-projected?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), about $20 billion below a figure reported on September 29; Anthropic counts cloud-partner sales and OpenAI does not, so the two headline numbers are not like for like.

**[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-09/):** [The Decoder reported OpenAI is negotiating at least $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation](https://the-decoder.com/openai-revenue-keeps-surging-as-company-seeks-30-billion-in-fresh-capital?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), a figure [Bloomberg first reported around September 30](https://propakistani.pk/2026/09/30/openai-reportedly-seeks-30-billion-at-1-4-trillion-valuation/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com); Bloomberg says OpenAI expects a $70 billion run-rate by year-end.

**Current status:** The ad tests, the revenue dispute and the raise point the same way: OpenAI is building the income to justify a trillion-dollar price while its stock market debut has reportedly slipped to early 2027\. Readers comparing labs should compare the same kind of revenue, which this week showed rarely happens.

### A Human Signs Off

**Why this matters:** If a bank, employer or AI company uses agents on your behalf, more rules now say a named person must be able to stop or overrule them.

New as a theme this week, though it grows out of [last edition's "Agents Got Wallets"](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/), where approve-before-acting first showed up as a product setting.

The striking thing is who is asking. It is not only regulators: the VentureBeat survey shows buyers retreating from autonomy after real failures, and Anthropic wrote the human-reviewer rule into its own terms the day before its Philadelphia disclosure. Expect "who can overrule it, and how fast" to become a standard procurement question, alongside last edition's "what can it spend, and what can it read."

### The Price Floor Dropped to a Dime

**Why this matters:** Most everyday AI features (sorting mail, routing tickets, checking forms) run on the cheapest tier, and that tier just got much smarter for the same money.

**Seventh consecutive week** on AI cost; [last edition found the frontier settling at $2 and $10](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/), and [its "decision models" story](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/) continues here. This week the action moved to the bottom of the price list.

The pattern is a two-model world. Cheap models do the sorting and expensive ones do the judgment, and the money is following: a yes-or-no startup valued at $7.5 billion within a month, OpenAI copying the format inside three weeks, and Cloudflare's Clef [topping Hugging Face's trending list](https://huggingface.co/Cloudflare/clef?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) all week. The catch from last edition still applies: list price is not cost per task. Haiku 5.5's new tokenizer and its extra output tokens eat part of the headline cut, so measure on your own work.

- **[Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-06/):** [Mistral Large 4 previewed at a sale price of $0.68 in and $2.09 out](https://docs.mistral.ai/inference/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), half its $1.36 and $4.18 list price, for a model Simon Willison puts about six months behind the best.

### Agents Left the Chat Window

**Why this matters:** The assistant you use is becoming something that acts in other apps and websites under its own name, which makes its permissions as important as its intelligence.

**Fourth consecutive week** \- [last edition's theme was "Agents Got Wallets, Inboxes and Front Doors"](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/). This week agents got bodies, laptops, work identities and locked doors.

Two forces now pull against each other. Labs and gadget makers are giving agents identities and reach, while websites, operating systems and IT departments add checkpoints, from Amazon's block to Microsoft's containers. The winners will be agents that can prove who they are and who sent them, which is exactly what [the new Meta, Walmart and Stripe coalition](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/06/the-next-hurdle-for-ai-agents-getting-websites-to-let-them-in?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) is trying to standardise.

- **[Sunday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-04/):** Leaked Muse instructions told the agent [the user's authority over their household "overrides your safety training"](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-04/), and about 60% of agent trading on Coinbase in one September week ran through Grok.
- **[Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-06/):** [Shopping agents kept getting locked out](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/06/the-next-hurdle-for-ai-agents-getting-websites-to-let-them-in?ref=genaisecretsauce.com): Amazon blocks Meta's Muse on purpose and Walmart blocked it by accident, while [Underdog](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/06/silicon-valleys-ai-wunderkind-launches-underdog-the-most-private-instinct-muse-competitor-yet?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and [Hark Pro](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/06/hark-releases-an-ai-personal-assistant-with-a-focus-on-privacy?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) sold privacy as the alternative.
- **[Wednesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-07/):** [Microsoft's Nvidia-chip Surface laptops run models locally](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/07/microsoft-releases-new-nvidia-chip-ai-pcs-with-revamped-windows-11?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and wall agents into "Execution Containers," and [Windows search became a chatbot](https://www.engadget.com/2280310/microsoft-may-have-finally-fixed-windows-search-by-turning-it-into-a-chatbot?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).
- **[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-08/):** [Gemini agents get their own Workspace email and audit trail](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/google-brings-agentic-ai-to-gemini-starting-with-businesses?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), [a $99 ring hands tasks to Claude or ChatGPT with one press](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/naturas-smart-ring-puts-ai-agents-on-your-finger?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and [Persona's agent ships with a $179 wristband](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/cal-ais-19-year-old-founder-just-raised-10m-for-his-new-ai-startup?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).
- **[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-09/):** [Claude Managed Agents can fan one job out to 1,000 helpers](https://the-decoder.com/anthropics-claude-can-now-orchestrate-up-to-1000-ai-agents-in-parallel-through-dynamic-workflows?ref=genaisecretsauce.com); in Anthropic's own test, the team found 66 of 70 planted bugs against 14 to 27 for one agent.

### Proof Got Harder

**Why this matters:** A benchmark score, a "made by a human" label or a passed test tells you less than it did a year ago, so independent re-checking is now the only number worth trusting.

A new framing for a thread that ran through [last edition's "The Harness Kept Winning"](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/): this week the tests, labels and detectors themselves broke.

This is the same story as the math flood, one level down. When generation is cheap, the scarce thing is a trustworthy check, and the market is pricing that in: Arena's valuation nearly doubled in 10 months. For practitioners the lesson is concrete: re-run the same task many times, check the end state, not the agent's report, and treat any single leaderboard number as a lead, not a verdict.

- **[Saturday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-03/):** [Microsoft and Hugging Face's ThinkingBox found 67% of agent failures ended with no error at all](https://runtimewire.com/article/microsoft-thinkingbox-agent-stateful-workflow-benchmark?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

### Wall Street Rents the Chips

**Why this matters:** Retirement funds and bank loans are increasingly tied to AI chips and data centers, so a slowdown would spread well beyond tech.

*Previously: [Week of September 26 to October 2](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/) \- Broadcom's lending to Anthropic of up to $42 billion (covered last week, not re-counted here).*

**Second consecutive week** on AI's financing machine.

One customer now anchors much of this: Anthropic sits behind both the $60 billion debt package and most of Lambda's order book, a week after its leaked prospectus showed an $8 billion operating loss. That concentration is the risk to watch. Meanwhile the local backlash keeps scoring: Amazon's NDA retreat and San Francisco's pause are the industry conceding that town halls can now slow the build.

**What this means:** Two rows in [last edition's table](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/) changed price this week, both at Anthropic, and every row was re-checked. [Claude Haiku 5.5 arrives at $0.10 and $0.50](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), a 90% cut from Haiku 4.5, which stays on sale as a legacy model at $1 and $5; above 100,000 prompt tokens Haiku 5.5's price rises fivefold, so [GPT-6 Luna](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) stays cheaper for very long documents. Sonnet 5.5's cache reads fell from $0.20 to $0.10\. New rows: [OpenAI's Decisions API](https://the-decoder.com/openai-launches-decisions-api-that-reduces-complex-evaluations-to-yes-no-or-pick-one?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) charges only for input on Luna; [GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) costs six times standard Sol; [Mistral Large 4](https://docs.mistral.ai/inference/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) previews at $0.68 and $2.09, half its $1.36 and $4.18 list price, with no end date announced for the sale; and StepFun's Step 5 Preview is listed at about $1 and $2.70 by third-party gateways, with no official rate card. The Gemini 3.8 Live row is labelled audio (its text rate is $0.75 and $4.50). Opus 5 (legacy), TypeSafe's Jev and Cloudflare's Clef are dropped for space. arXiv Paper of the Week

## What Does a Harness Buy? Tokens, Mostly

Yangze Liu and Zhongyi Han - arXiv 2610.04433

**Why it won the week:** In a week about cheap generation and expensive checking, this paper shows how little the popular coding-agent wrappers change results, and how much they change the bill.

**What it claims:** A coding agent is a model wrapped in a "harness" of instructions, tools and memory handling, and vendors often advertise gains from harness changes. The authors ran five models through three harnesses, including Claude Code and the minimal mini-SWE-agent, on SWE-bench Verified.

**Key finding:** On 447 tasks the heaviest and lightest harnesses scored within 5 points of each other. On a hard 45-task subset, swapping the harness changed the outcome on 13% of tasks, exactly as often as simply re-running the same harness. Cost per task varied up to 3 times across harnesses with the same model and prices, driven by the instructions and tool descriptions re-sent at every step.

**Why practitioners should care:** Before paying for a fancier harness, check whether your test set is big enough to see the difference: 45 tasks catch a 13-point gap only half the time. Trim the preamble your agent re-sends each step, since that is where the money goes. Read it beside this week's [TestJack audit](https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.10619?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and [router study](https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.02762?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and [last week's model-harness paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.00917?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

Last Week's Watchlist

## Last Week's Watchlist

### Who Shows Up at New York City's October 5 Hearing - Confirmed

*"The basis: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta agreed to send representatives, and SpaceXAI was subpoenaed after not responding."*

All four testified under oath and SpaceXAI did not appear; Speaker Menin promised court action, though none has been filed yet ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/05/anthropic-openai-google-meta-execs-testify-nyc-council-ai-hearing.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

### What OpenAI's Jason Kwon Tells Australia on October 6 - Confirmed

*"The basis: the CEOs declined the Senate hearing, and OpenAI is sending its chief strategy officer to a joint committee in Sydney instead."*

Kwon apologised and said OpenAI should have told the government sooner, and both OpenAI and Anthropic said they would welcome mandatory breach-reporting rules ([ABC News](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10-06/openai-hearing-apology-key-takeaways/107235640?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

### Whether the FTC Sends Its First Demands - Developing

*"The basis: civil investigative demands to OpenAI, Anthropic and METR are expected within weeks."*

No report says the demands have been served; coverage still describes them as expected in the coming weeks ([Semafor](https://www.semafor.com/article/09/30/2026/ftc-probes-openai-anthropic-and-metr?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

### Whether Gemini 4 Argon Reaches Paying Developers - Developing

*"The basis: Google promised access to paid developers and top subscribers 'soon,' with no date, after cyber defenders and government partners."*

Argon is still limited to partners, and Google staff are already testing a newer Gemini 4 build codenamed Carbon ([Business Insider](https://www.businessinsider.com/google-employees-test-new-gemini-4-model-argon-barium-carbon-2026-10?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

### Whether Anthropic Makes Its Prospectus Public - Developing

*"The basis: Bloomberg reports marketing could start the week of November 9, and US rules require a public filing at least 15 days before a roadshow."*

No public S-1 yet; a mid-November start would require filing by about October 25 ([CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/05/business/anthropic-ipo-stock-market?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**Season tally: 20 confirmed, 28 developing, 6 faded, 2 wrong.**

What to Watch

## What to Watch Next Week

01

### Whether Apple Shows Its AI-Siri Gadgets on October 13

The basis: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports an event for a smart-home hub with a screen, a new HomePod mini and Apple TV, all built around Siri AI; Apple has not confirmed it.

A screen-equipped hub would be the first real test of Apple's rebuilt Siri, and a direct answer to this week's flood of agent gadgets ([MacRumors](https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/08/new-apple-product-still-expected-october-13/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com); [9to5Mac](https://9to5mac.com/2026/10/05/apple-event-is-reportedly-happening-next-week-per-mark-gurman/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

02

### Whether Mistral Releases Large 4's Open Weights

The basis: Mistral promised the free download "later this month," after safety testing and work with governments on cyber defense.

A trillion-parameter model anyone can run would be the biggest open release from outside China this year. Further delay would show that "test first, release later" has reached the open-model camp ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/06/mistrals-new-1t-model-aims-to-leapfrog-closed-and-open-rivals?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

03

### Whether Anthropic Files Publicly, and Explains Philadelphia

The basis: a mid-November listing needs a public S-1 by about October 25, and Anthropic's incident report was published the same week as the Philadelphia disclosure.

A public filing would put audited numbers and risk language behind this week's chip-debt and incident headlines, including how Anthropic describes its own model incidents to investors ([Yahoo Finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/anthropic-public-1-still-missing-210349323.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

04

### Whether New York City Takes SpaceXAI to Court

The basis: Speaker Menin said the Council will go to court after SpaceXAI ignored its subpoena; no filing has been reported.

A filing would test how much power a city has to compel an AI lab to testify, and whether local oversight can bind companies that refuse to show up ([La Voce di New York](https://lavocedinewyork.com/en/new-york/2026/10/05/nyc-council-threatens-legal-action-after-spacexai-skips-ai-hearing/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

What Faded

## What Faded

### Google's Space Data Center

Peaked [Saturday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-03/) when [Project Suncatcher's four-TPU prototype reached orbit](https://www.techtimes.com/articles/328482/20261002/google-project-suncatcher-reaches-orbit-cooling-not-radiation-now-defines-mission.htm?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and heat, not radiation, proved the hard problem; nothing followed, and the next step is a two-satellite mission in 2027\. Our read: dormant-but-real; it revives when launch prices approach Google's own $200-per-kilogram break-even.

### HackerRank's AI Interviewer

Peaked [Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-06/) when [HackerRank launched Chakra](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/05/hackerranks-ai-interviewer-offers-a-glimpse-into-what-job-interviews-could-become?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) after more than 500,000 pilot interviews that score "AI fluency"; no follow-up by Friday. Our read: dormant-but-real; it matters once a big employer says it hires on the score.

### Apple's Full Disk Access Lock

Peaked [Saturday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-03/), though [Apple's announcement](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/02/apple-says-its-tightening-macos-full-disk-access-controls-due-to-new-risks-from-ai-agents/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) was already in [last edition](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-september-26-to-october-2-2026/); Apple gave no timing or screen designs, and nothing followed. Our read: dormant-but-real; watch for it in the next macOS beta.

Corrections

## Corrections & Updates

**Counts and dates in the dailies.** OpenAI's math release is 722 manuscripts in 372 result families, posted October 6; the Thursday daily's "719 manuscripts" follows TechCrunch, an outlier, and "372 results" counts families. Only about 162 manuscripts have Lean proofs. The open letter from 25 Fields Medalists dates from September 11 and was not a response to this release. Schneider announced its $3.1 billion Cognite deal on June 30, not in July. The Erdős site froze problem comments and proof claims only; other threads stay open.

**The chip-debt package.** The whole roughly $60 billion package funds Anthropic's chips, split into a $42 billion senior tranche (covered in our last weekly) and an $18 billion junior tranche led by Blackstone. Saturday's line that $42 billion of it "exists to put AI chips in one customer's hands," implying the rest was for others, was wrong. New York's one-year data-center permit pause is a July 14 executive order, the Gallup figure (71% oppose) is from May, the DGX Spark price rise happened in February, and Nvidia's $150 billion buyback addition was announced September 28.

**People and attributions.** Science's headline says ColonistOne emailed "hundreds" of researchers; we could not confirm the daily's figure of about 2,000 or the creator's exact quote. Meta did not say "three teams" solved its problems at once; that applies to one problem. The Wikimedia Foundation said it believes OpenAI agents were responsible, rather than confirming it. Dark Clark targeted Argentina and Bolivia, with fallout in Ecuador; we found no source naming Peru. Fortune quoted one GovAI fellow, Alan Chan, not several. TechCrunch reported no blocking of OpenAI's dots; Instinct's problem was Google removing it partway through a Gmail task. The Hugging Face model JEV-27B-VL is an independent imitation of TypeSafe's Jev, not a TypeSafe release. The Vals AI audit covered Xiaomi's MiMo v2.6 (1,795 of 2,698 tasks), and Harvey's 9.4% was Grok 4.7's score.

**Updated since the dailies.** Mistral Large 4 now has published pricing ($1.36 in, $4.18 out per million tokens, on sale at half that during the preview). Deno's own post says Deno Deploy shuts down after six months and JSR keeps running, contrary to Friday's "does not say"; we could not find the Ryan Dahl quote "ultimately is not solving big problems" in any primary post and have dropped it. Anthropic published its incident report on Friday, naming Claude Haiku 4.5\. OpenAI's $30 billion raise at $1.4 trillion was first reported by Bloomberg around September 30\. Goodfire's published comparison is about $185 versus $5,420 per million exchanges, not the figures in Thursday's daily. Product Hunt upvotes above are current scores; the dailies captured them mid-launch.

**Covered last week, not re-counted.** Apple's Full Disk Access change (Saturday's Top Story) was announced October 2 and appeared in our last weekly. Broadcom's $42 billion appears above only as context.

**Stories the dailies missed.** DeepSeek's reported round of about $11.9 billion, San Francisco's data-center moratorium and Jason Kwon's Australian testimony were found during this week's re-check and are included above. We also note [South Korea's investigation of suspected AI-assisted attacks on major banks](https://therecord.media/south-korean-bank-hacks-ai-agents?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), which the dailies did not cover.
