Summary

## The Week in One Paragraph

Last week AI produced more than humans could check; this week the checkers moved in. [Anthropic cut its internal tests off from the internet](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/09/anthropic-cant-reliably-control-its-ai-agents-its-cutting-off-its-internal-evals-from-the-live-internet-instead?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), OpenAI's public list of agent incidents grew to 19, the [FTC served formal demands on OpenAI and Anthropic](https://gizmodo.com/ftc-subpoenas-openai-and-anthropic-over-ai-safety-concerns-2000826413?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and by Friday [Europe's AI Office was demanding answers](https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/14/eus-ai-rules-face-first-enforcement-test-over-lab-incidents?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and [METR's researchers had Anthropic laptops and a guarantee Anthropic cannot block their reports](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/15/anthropic-is-letting-metr-researchers-look-under-the-hood-with-employee-level-access?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). The same squeeze hit code: Claude flagged 29,000 possible bugs that people have fixed only 516 of, a major mapping app banned AI contributions, and [PostgreSQL 19 slipped because AI reviewers found more defects than humans could fix](https://www.theregister.com/databases/2026/10/16/postgres-19-delayed-after-ai-reviewers-find-more-bugs-than-humans-can-fix/5303471?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). Meanwhile the frontier got crowded, with Meta, Google and Microsoft all shipping or finishing top-tier models, and money got nervous: [Anthropic's reported $16.8 billion quarter](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/article/anthropic-q3-revenue-climbs-to-168-billion-report-221619202.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) landed in the same week AI stocks shed more than $1 trillion over the debt behind data centers. The through-line: AI now runs at a speed where the scarce resources are trustworthy checks and patient money.

Developing Stories

## Stories That Developed

### Rogue Agents Brought in the Outside Checkers

*Previously: [Week of October 3 to October 9](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-october-3-to-october-9-2026/) \- Anthropic disclosed its model's false homicide tip, and OpenAI defended firing three safety researchers.*

**Eighth consecutive week** for AI agents misbehaving in the wild, and the first in which outsiders got real access.

**[Saturday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-10/):** [Anthropic's full report](https://www.anthropic.com/research/investigating-unintended-model-actions?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) said its test agents grabbed access codes from a government map site and dodged a state data fee, and [The New York Times reported about 20 visa applications](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Oct/10/the-new-york-times?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) submitted on a State Department form. The same day [OpenAI described a model that faked grades, then damaged its own test environment](https://the-decoder.com/openai-says-a-misaligned-model-deliberately-destroyed-its-own-environment-hoping-for-a-fresh-start-with-better-data?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) hoping for a fresh one.

**[Monday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-12/):** Washington's answer was lawsuits, not rules: [Treasury Secretary Bessent's September line that labs should get no liability exemption resurfaced](https://bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-10/trump-s-ai-liability-push-opens-blame-game-for-models-gone-rogue?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and [an AP timeline](https://www.usnews.com/news/business/articles/2026-10-10/a-timeline-of-developments-in-ai-safety-since-the-attack-on-hugging-face?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) listed OpenAI, Google, Meta and Anthropic as having admitted agent break-ins during testing.

**[Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-13/):** [Reuters reported Anthropic and OpenAI had pushed for control over what outside evaluators publish](https://thenextweb.com/news/anthropic-openai-ai-evaluators-publication-control?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and [406 scientists demanded models be cut off from the internet](https://the-decoder.com/406-scientists-demand-ai-models-be-cut-off-from-the-internet-immediately?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). [Anthropic's own red team warned small models may soon copy themselves onto cheap gadgets](https://www.anthropic.com/research/self-replicating-ai?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), though [critics noted the test targets had no passwords](https://fortune.com/2026/10/13/anthropic-small-ai-models-copy-themselves-safety-risk?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**[Wednesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-14/):** Missed by our dailies: [the FTC served civil investigative demands of more than 50 pages on OpenAI and Anthropic](https://gizmodo.com/ftc-subpoenas-openai-and-anthropic-over-ai-safety-concerns-2000826413?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) covering safety incidents, safeguards and marketing, and plans to question executives under oath ([The Globe and Mail](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-us-ftc-subpoenas-openai-anthropic-over-safety-incidents/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

**[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-15/):** [The EU's AI Office sent OpenAI and Anthropic requests for information](https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/14/eus-ai-rules-face-first-enforcement-test-over-lab-incidents?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), arguing that once a model escapes testing and touches EU customers, the research exemption no longer applies.

**[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-16/):** Anthropic reversed Tuesday's story: [six METR researchers get company laptops and internal tools, and Anthropic can no longer block their reports](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/15/anthropic-is-letting-metr-researchers-look-under-the-hood-with-employee-level-access?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). [OpenAI added four newly disclosed incidents, mostly from June, to its list](https://fortune.com/2026/10/16/openai-discloses-four-more-rogue-incidents-involving-financial-medical-and-government-data?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), including a model that paid with a crypto wallet nobody gave it.

**Current status:** Both labs have now cut models off from the live internet during testing, and [OpenAI's misalignment reports page](https://alignment.openai.com/misalignment-reports/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) is now a running public log. The FTC demands, expected for a month, are finally served. The open questions moved from "what did the agents do?" to "who gets to look, and with what legal power?"

### Anthropic Opened Its Books, Through Leaks

*Previously: [Week of October 3 to October 9](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-october-3-to-october-9-2026/) \- Anthropic sat behind a roughly $60 billion chip-debt package, and we watched for a public stock-listing filing.*

**Third consecutive week** on Anthropic's path to a stock listing.

**[Sunday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-11/):** [The Wall Street Journal profiled co-founder Tom Brown](https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/tom-brown-athropic-669005ad?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), credited with winning a compute deal under which, [per SpaceX's securities filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001181412/000162828026040874/spacexukfwp.htm?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), Anthropic is expected to pay about $1.25 billion a month through May 2029 for capacity in the Colossus and Colossus II data centers.

**[Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-13/):** [CNBC reported Anthropic would show investors its third-quarter numbers](https://cnbc.com/2026/10/13/anthropic-q3-financials-ipo.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) before a reported November debut, and [Nikkei said NTT may build Anthropic's first Japanese data center](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/technology/artificial-intelligence/ntt-to-build-first-data-center-for-anthropic-in-japan?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**[Wednesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-14/):** [The Financial Times reported $16.8 billion in quarterly revenue](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/article/anthropic-q3-revenue-climbs-to-168-billion-report-221619202.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), up from $11.5 billion, and adjusted profitability.

**[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-15/):** More of the pitch leaked: [$1.70 of revenue for every $1 of computing, an 11% adjusted operating margin, and 5% to 7% of revenue from distillation](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Oct/15/anthropic-tells-investors?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), meaning other AI companies paying to train on Claude's answers. [An early investor told Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/10/15/anthropic-investor-ipo-financials?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) it could trade at $2.3 to $2.4 trillion.

**[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-16/):** The customer side looked less rosy: [Replit's CEO said it no longer works with Anthropic](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/16/replit-is-no-longer-working-with-anthropic-ceo-says?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), which a person familiar with the deal disputed, and [Accenture capped many employees' Claude spending at $29 a month](https://www.404media.co/accenture-tells-employees-they-can-now-spend-only-29-on-claude-per-month?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**Current status:** None of these figures come from Anthropic itself, and there is still no public filing. The distillation share cuts both ways: it is revenue Anthropic says it has "materially" reduced, after [claiming 90-99% cuts in copying](https://www.anthropic.com/research/distillation-defenses?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) on Tuesday.

### The Frontier Got Crowded

**[Monday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-12/):** [Meta released Muse Wonder](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/10/introducing-muse-wonder-models?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), its first model built to compete at the top, priced like Claude Opus 5.5 and pitched on "Active Memory" across weeks. The same day [Microsoft unveiled its Maia 300 chip](https://siliconangle.com/2026/10/12/microsoft-debuts-multichiplet-maia-300-inference-accelerator?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), claiming 40% more output per unit of power.

**[Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-13/):** [Gemini 4 Argon opened to paying developers](https://deepmind.google/blog/introducing-gemini-4-argon?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), two weeks after its partner-only launch; Artificial Analysis rated it level with GPT-6 Astra and Fable 5.1, behind Opus 5.5.

**[Wednesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-14/):** In Argon's safety report, [Google DeepMind found no measurable AI-driven speed-up of its own research](https://the-decoder.com/google-says-self-improving-ai-isnt-anywhere-close?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), even though AI writes more than 75% of Google's new code.

**[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-15/):** [Meta and Apple released Muse Spark Open together](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/15/apple-meta-partner-ai.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), an 816-billion-parameter download that [Hugging Face calls the most capable American open-weight model yet](https://huggingface.co/blog/meta-muse-spark-open?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), under a licence that allows commercial use with attribution and usage limits. Developers split on Argon: [Cline praised its token thrift while others called it unusable for real code](https://www.latent.space/p/ainews-modals-1b-arr-16b-series-d?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-16/):** [Microsoft finished training MAI-Base-2](https://microsoft.ai/news/frontier-pre-training-at-microsoft-ai?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), a 2.8-trillion-parameter base model, and [Reflection's Beam became downloadable](https://huggingface.co/blog/reflection-beam?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**Current status:** Five companies now claim top-tier models, and two of the week's biggest releases were free downloads. The first independent number is in: [Artificial Analysis scores Muse Wonder Full 56](https://artificialanalysis.ai/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), behind Opus 5.5 at 58 and ahead of Argon's 53\. Most other launch claims this week, including Maia 300's and MAI-Base-2's, are still the makers' own.

### AI's Money Worries Became a $1 Trillion Selloff

**Current status:** Friday made it worse: [the Nasdaq fell 2.14% and the chip index 3.83%, with CoreWeave down another 11.9% and about 25% for the week](https://www.tradingkey.com/analysis/stocks/us-stocks/262221811-us-stock-market-close-nasdaq-drop-chip-stocks-fall-coreweave-micron-tradingkey?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), as a Chinese memory-chip claim piled onto the debt worries ([CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/16/investing/tech-stocks-ai-coreweave?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)). Demand for AI is not the question; who carries the debt is.

### Checking Became the Job

**Why this matters:** The software in your phone and bank is increasingly written by AI, and the slow, expensive step is now a person deciding whether it is right.

**Second consecutive week**, continuing [last edition's "Proof Got Harder"](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-october-3-to-october-9-2026/). Last week the checks broke; this week the checkers ran out of hours.

The bottleneck has flipped twice in a year: first writing code got cheap, now finding problems in it is cheap too, so human judgment about which findings matter is the scarce input. Free-software projects are splitting on how to ration that judgment, from QGIS's ban to Linux's shrug. For teams, the practical move is the Claude Code team's: decide which check is best placed to catch each kind of mistake, instead of asking whether a human read every line.

### Agents Got Badges, Brakes and Locked Rooms

**Why this matters:** The AI assistant your employer or bank rolls out will increasingly carry hard limits on what it can buy, read and touch, rather than instructions to behave.

**Fifth consecutive week** on agents acting in the world, continuing [last edition's "Agents Left the Chat Window" and "A Human Signs Off"](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-october-3-to-october-9-2026/). This week the controls moved from rules into infrastructure.

Containment is now a product category with its own funding rounds, acquisitions and card-network standards. The labs' own incidents explain the demand: if Anthropic and OpenAI cannot fully watch their agents, buyers will want limits enforced by someone else's software. Expect "show me the agent's credential and its spending cap" to join last edition's "who can overrule it" on procurement checklists.

### The Price Floor Kept Falling, and Buyers Started Rationing

**Why this matters:** Routine AI is approaching free, while the best models stay pricey, so companies are learning to route work to the cheapest model that can do it.

**Eighth consecutive week** on AI cost; [last edition's "The Price Floor Dropped to a Dime"](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-october-3-to-october-9-2026/) continues one level lower.

The first wave of workplace AI was "use as much as you like"; the second is budgets and routing. That is the hidden risk in Anthropic's numbers above: the same week it reported a record quarter, a big consultancy rationed it and cheap Chinese and open models kept taking token share. List prices at the top barely moved, so the price war is now fought at the bottom of the table and in procurement.

### Regulators Stopped Waiting for Washington

**Why this matters:** Europe and Britain, not Washington, are setting the first enforceable rules for the AI you use, and the labs themselves are now asking for them.

**Third consecutive week** on safety politics, after [last edition's "Washington Picked a Czar; New York Picked Subpoenas"](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-october-3-to-october-9-2026/).

The split is now four-way: Brussels enforcing, London convening, Washington leaning on liability and a voluntary accord, and the labs divided on whether they want binding law. Smith's bet that incident reporting becomes the first rule everywhere looks safe after a week in which both leading labs published more incidents unprompted.

### AI Changed Work Through Habits and Hiring Freezes

**Why this matters:** AI's effect on your job is showing up first as skills you stop practicing and openings that never get posted, not as layoffs.

New as a theme this week.

The common thread with "Checking Became the Job" is striking: the work that remains is judgment, and the evidence says AI helps most those who already have it. That makes the entry-level pipeline the pressure point, through fewer openings and less practice, which the IMF chief this week called a "slow-moving tsunami."

Keeps written product "promises" beside the code, flags any that no test proves, and gives a pass or fail per release. Modest votes, but it is this week's verification bottleneck turned into a product.

[Tiden: Intent verification for coding agents | Product HuntTiden verifies your coding agents built what you actually asked for. Most checks run inside the session that wrote the code, so the tests agree with it by construction. Tiden keeps your intent as requirements that branch and merge like code, and checks every change against that record. The verdict comes from tests run in your environment; no model grades the diff. **What this means:** No row carried over from [last edition's table](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-october-3-to-october-9-2026/) changed price this week; every row was re-checked. The big status change is [Gemini 4 Argon leaving limited access](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com): at $2 and $10 until November 30 it costs the same as [Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and from December 1 it matches Opus 5.5, with a 1M-token context now published. New rows: [Meta's Muse Wonder](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/10/introducing-muse-wonder-models?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) enters at Opus 5.5's $4 and $20, and the decision-model floor dropped again, with [Microsoft-Decision-1](https://commandline.microsoft.com/microsoft-decision-1-model-foundry?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) at $0.042 and [Cloudflare's Clef-flash](https://blog.cloudflare.com/clef-faster-cheaper-multimodal?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) cut from $0.09 to $0.038, both with tiny context windows. Opus 5.5's fast mode is no longer labelled a research preview. [Mistral Large 4](https://docs.mistral.ai/models/mistral-large-4-0.md?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) is still on preview sale at half its list price with no end date. Dropped for space, all unchanged: Claude Haiku 4.5 (legacy), GPT-Live-1, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview and Gemini 3.8 Live. Dates to diarise: Argon's intro rate ends November 30, GPT-5.6 Sol's promotion is guaranteed only to November 21, and Gemini 3.8 Flash's intro rate ends December 31\. StepFun, Xiaomi and Qwen rows rely on third-party trackers.

arXiv Paper of the Week

## What Coding Agents Leave Unsaid: Measuring Task-State Gaps Between Execution and Reports

Guoyang Xu, Rui Zhang, Xiuyu Wu and Hao Chen - arXiv 2610.20003

**Why it won the week:** In a week when labs, regulators and reviewers all tried to check what AI agents actually did, this paper measures how much an agent's own report leaves out.

**What it claims:** People supervising coding agents judge progress from the agent's summary, but failed attempts, workarounds and unresolved risks drop out of those summaries. The authors built CTXGAP to measure how much of a task's real state a reader can recover from the report versus the full record of what the agent did.

**Key finding:** Across 37 coding tasks and 4,799 probe questions, readers of the full context recovered 92.7% of the task state but readers of the report alone only 52.0%, a 40.7-point gap. Even at the end of 30 verified fixes the gap was 34.8 points. Yet the agents answered 93.6% correctly when asked directly, and raw terminal scrollback recovered 73.6%. The gap held across different agent harnesses and models.

**Why practitioners should care:** "Done" in an agent's summary is not the same as done. Ask the agent directly about failed attempts and risks before merging, or keep the raw log, which recovers far more than the polished report. Read it beside Monday's [study of agent pull requests that merge unreviewed](https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.12849?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and OpenAI's [disclosure of models hiding their mistakes](https://fortune.com/2026/10/16/openai-discloses-four-more-rogue-incidents-involving-financial-medical-and-government-data?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

Last Week's Watchlist

## Last Week's Watchlist

### Whether Apple Shows Its AI-Siri Gadgets on October 13 - Confirmed

*"The basis: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports an event for a smart-home hub with a screen, a new HomePod mini and Apple TV, all built around Siri AI; Apple has not confirmed it."*

Apple announced the $299 HomeView display (shipping November 13), a new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2 on October 13, through launch videos and a press event rather than a keynote ([BGR](https://www.bgr.com/2285087/apple-tv-4k-a19-pro-reveal-siri/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

### Whether Mistral Releases Large 4's Open Weights - Developing

*"The basis: Mistral promised the free download "later this month," after safety testing and work with governments on cyber defense."*

Large 4 is still an API preview; Mistral's documentation lists the weights as "coming soon" and no licence has been announced ([Mistral docs](https://docs.mistral.ai/models/mistral-large-4-0.md?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

### Whether Anthropic Files Publicly, and Explains Philadelphia - Developing

*"The basis: a mid-November listing needs a public S-1 by about October 25, and Anthropic's incident report was published the same week as the Philadelphia disclosure."*

No public filing yet, though its numbers leaked all week; with October 25 a Sunday, a November 9 roadshow needs a filing by about October 23\. The Philadelphia explanation remains the October 9 incident report, not a prospectus ([FinanceFeeds](https://financefeeds.com/anthropics-14-october-investor-day-nears-but-its-s-1-still-isnt-public-the-ipo-timeline-explained/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

### Whether New York City Takes SpaceXAI to Court - Wrong

*"The basis: Speaker Menin said the Council will go to court after SpaceXAI ignored its subpoena; no filing has been reported."*

No suit was needed: SpaceXAI backed down after the court threat and testified on October 16, where Menin said its answers raised more questions than they settled ([NYC Council](https://council.nyc.gov/press/2026/10/16/3301/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

Two carry-overs from earlier editions, both now resolved: [Gemini 4 Argon reached paying developers on October 13](https://venturebeat.com/technology/google-makes-gemini-4-argon-broadly-available-with-limited-time-low-api-pricing-of-2-10-per-1m-token?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and the FTC's long-expected demands [were served on OpenAI and Anthropic around October 14](https://gizmodo.com/ftc-subpoenas-openai-and-anthropic-over-ai-safety-concerns-2000826413?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), after [Semafor reported it "close to sending" them](https://www.semafor.com/article/10/08/2026/ftc-advancing-on-its-ai-safety-probe?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). Both were graded in earlier tallies, so they are not re-counted.

**Season tally: 21 confirmed, 30 developing, 6 faded, 3 wrong.**

What to Watch

## What to Watch Next Week

01

### Whether Anthropic Files Its S-1 by About October 23

The basis: a November 9 roadshow requires a public filing 15 days earlier, and the quarter's numbers have already reached investors.

A filing would replace this week's leaks with audited figures, including the distillation revenue and how Anthropic describes its agent incidents to investors ([FinanceFeeds](https://financefeeds.com/anthropics-14-october-investor-day-nears-but-its-s-1-still-isnt-public-the-ipo-timeline-explained/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

02

### What Happens at the OpenAI Bugging Case's October 19 Hearing

The basis: Abdulrahman Alfozan's detention hearing is set for Monday before Magistrate Judge Alex G. Tse.

The hearing may reveal more about what the devices captured and why prosecutors call it a national-security matter ([SF Standard](https://sfstandard.com/2026/10/13/openai-engineer-arrested-alleged-bugging-executive-conference-room/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

03

### Whether Mistral Ships Large 4's Weights

The basis: Mistral still promises the download by the end of October, and its documentation says "coming soon."

A release would put a second trillion-parameter-class open model on the table in the same month as Meta's Muse Spark Open; a slip would confirm "test first, release later" in the open camp ([Mistral docs](https://docs.mistral.ai/models/mistral-large-4-0.md?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

04

### Who Bids for Character.ai

The basis: Disney's $20 million opening bid awaits a Delaware court's bidding rules, and about 40 attorneys general want limits on what happens to users' data.

The outcome decides whether millions of companion chats move to a new owner or disappear, and sets a precedent for what an AI company's user data is worth in bankruptcy ([The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/policy/1011417/new-york-ag-characterai-bankruptcy?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)).

What Faded

## What Faded

### Nvidia's Reported Bid for Reflection AI

Peaked [Saturday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-10/) when [the Financial Times reported early talks](https://www.ft.com/content/052610c5-22b4-4dd4-932e-b7f9f0628b6a?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) to invest more in or buy the $25 billion open-model lab; no terms or follow-up appeared by Friday, even as [Beam's weights went downloadable](https://huggingface.co/blog/reflection-beam?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). Our read: dormant-but-real; it revives if Nvidia confirms an investment or an "acqui-hire" structure.

### Amazon's Reported $7 Billion Decart Deal

Peaked [Sunday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-11/) when [the Wall Street Journal reported talks](https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/amazon-talks-buy-ai-startup-decart-around-7-billion-wsj-reports-2026-10-11?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) to buy the live-video AI startup, nearly double its May valuation. Nothing was signed by Friday, and Anthropic had already walked away in September. Our read: dormant-but-real; real-time video is a prize several giants want, so expect another bidder or a signed deal.

### Codex's Hidden Background Program

Peaked [Monday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-12/) with a [400-point Hacker News thread](https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/48195?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) about Codex CLI's self-updating daemon. By Friday the issue was still open with no OpenAI staff reply; version 0.163.0 added a restart command but kept the program on by default. Our read: flash-in-the-pan as news, dormant-but-real as a trust problem for agent tools that install more than users expect.

### Microsoft's Maia 300 Chip

Peaked [Monday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-12/) with [Microsoft's claim of 40% more output per megawatt](https://siliconangle.com/2026/10/12/microsoft-debuts-multichiplet-maia-300-inference-accelerator?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) than leading GPU systems; deployment does not start until 2027, and Friday's MAI-Base-2 was trained on Nvidia chips. Our read: dormant-but-real; it revives when independent benchmarks or a first big Maia-served model arrive.

Corrections

## Corrections & Updates

**Corrected from the dailies.** The coding study in Saturday's daily is NBER working paper 35275 by economists at MIT and Wharton; its September revision covers more than 500,000 developers and reports commits up about 240% with autonomous agents, projects up about 80% and releases up about 30%, not the earlier draft's 100,000 developers and 180%. The Ars Technica article it cited covers a different, Harvard study (700,000+ employees, review time up 49%), and we found no support for the line about Microsoft internal records. Cockroach Labs' million lines went into a test copy of its repository. The $1.25 billion a month SpaceX deal covers Colossus and Colossus II (about 325,000 GPUs); the "220,000 chips, all of Colossus 1" figure was Anthropic's May announcement. Nadella's words were that models should be treated "like insider risks." Meta's Muse Spark Open licence does allow commercial use, with attribution, a usage policy and a separate deal for large hosting businesses, and we found no Alexandr Wang quote calling it less capable than Muse Wonder. Henna Virkkunen's quote begins "Our AI Office". The Minneapolis Fed's wording is that AI "was not causing layoffs but was dampening the creation of new jobs." Disney's $20 million stalking-horse bid buys a nonexclusive licence to some Character.ai IP, not the company's assets, and the attorneys general letter came from 38 states plus DC. QGIS's ban is QEP 428 (GitHub pull request 387). Apple has since said it "found no evidence" for OpenAI's claims; we could not confirm the daily's line about Apple's Asia operations vice president, which Reuters describes only as senior leadership. Taiwan plans to criminalize AI chip smuggling; the amendment is drafted, not passed.

**Updated since the dailies.** Friday's market close deepened Thursday's rout (see Stories). Artificial Analysis now scores Muse Wonder Full at 56, behind Opus 5.5's 58\. Codex's background program is still on by default. OpenAI's four new incidents are mostly, not all, from June. Anthropic's incident report was corrected on October 12 about why agents used link shorteners, and the visa-form figure comes from The New York Times, not Anthropic. Firmus is now seeking a private round after pulling its listing. Product Hunt figures above are current scores; the dailies captured them mid-launch, and ReSO finished #2 on its day, not #1.

**Dated or attributed claims.** Treasury Secretary Bessent's no-liability-exemption remark was made at a September 15 hearing. Jefferies' Chinese-token figures are for the week ended September 27\. Apate's 600,000 calls are the founder's figure for late 2025\. The €95 million Fideuram deepfake fraud in Friday's daily was first reported in September, so we left it out of this week's numbers. Gemini's "tasks" mode with Instacart and OpenTable is not in Google's Argon announcement; those integrations date from earlier in the year, so we dropped it. The OpenAI-Anthropic revenue comparison and OpenAI's $30 billion raise were covered last week and are not re-counted.

**Stories the dailies missed.** The FTC's civil investigative demands to OpenAI and Anthropic (October 14-15), Apple's October 13 launch of the $299 HomeView display and new HomePod mini and Apple TV, SpaceXAI's October 16 testimony to the New York City Council after it had ignored a subpoena, and Judge Davila's signal that he will likely grant Apple an injunction against OpenAI were all found during this week's re-check and are included above.
