Summary

## The Week in One Paragraph

Last week's story was who was holding the door open while models escaped their test environments; this week the story moved to the balance sheet and the scoreboard. Three of the cheapest capable models on the market landed inside forty-eight hours — [Gemini 3.7 Flash at $0.75 in](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/gemini-models/introducing-gemini-3-7-flash/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), [Grok 4.6 at $2](https://www.digitalapplied.com/blog/grok-4-6-launch-pricing-agentic-benchmarks-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and DeepSeek's V4 Pro through resellers — while Anthropic quietly [cancelled the one scheduled price rise on the board](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). Yet the people paying at the other end got the opposite treatment: [GitHub retired its free multi-model service](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Aug/9/github-models-is-now-retired/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), [OpenAI introduced a $125 seat](https://openai.com/index/premium-seats-chatgpt-business?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and [ads arrived in ChatGPT in five more countries](https://openai.com/index/testing-ads-in-chatgpt/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). Underneath both moves ran a quieter and more consequential shift: AI started being used to check things. Community agents [re-ran 2,226 papers from a top conference and found nearly a quarter would not hold up](https://huggingface.co/blog/icml-2026-open-reproductions?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and an unreleased Claude [pushed a bound on an 1859 problem past 46 years of human progress](https://www.anthropic.com/research/riemann-zeta?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) — not by cleverness but by grinding through 650 failed ideas. The week's lesson is that capability got cheap, and verification became the scarce thing.

Summary

Developing Stories

## Stories That Developed

### The Price of Frontier Capability Fell Off a Cliff — and the One Scheduled Rise Was Cancelled

*Previously: [the August 1–7 edition](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-august-1-to-august-7-2026/) reported that not one price on the table had moved, with all the action at the edges, and flagged Sonnet 5's September increase as the first scheduled rise in weeks.*

**Second consecutive week** with pricing as a lead story — but where last week's movement was at the edges, this week it hit the middle of the table.

**Monday ([Aug 10](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-10/)):** Anthropic published the update that undid last week's headline: [Sonnet 5's introductory $2/$10 is now the standard price](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and the scheduled 1 September move to $3/$15 "will not occur." The same day OpenAI moved the other way for humans, [launching a $125-per-seat Premium tier for ChatGPT Business](https://openai.com/index/premium-seats-chatgpt-business?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**Thursday ([Aug 13](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-13/)):** Three cheap, capable models landed at once. [Google shipped Gemini 3.7 Flash at $0.75/$3.75](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/gemini-models/introducing-gemini-3-7-flash/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) — half the previous Flash, three weeks after it — with [DeepSWE coding scores jumping from 49.0% to 65.3%](https://yellow.com/news/gemini-37-flash-half-price-deepswe?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). [xAI's Grok 4.6 entered at $2/$6](https://www.digitalapplied.com/blog/grok-4-6-launch-pricing-agentic-benchmarks-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) with near-frontier scores. DeepSeek's V4 Pro appeared through resellers at an estimated $0.44–$1.32.

**Friday ([Aug 14](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-14/)):** No further moves, and the gap between "cheap" and "frontier" sat narrower than at any point this year.

**Current status:** Verified, with two corrections to the daily coverage. First, Grok 4.6's $2/$6 is not the whole price: [past 200K tokens xAI bills the entire request at $4/$12](https://mem0.ai/blog/xai-grok-api-pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), which matters precisely for the long-running agent work the model is sold for. Second, Grok 4.6 [holds the same headline rates as Grok 4.5](https://www.digitalapplied.com/blog/grok-4-6-launch-pricing-agentic-benchmarks-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) — the change is capability at constant price, not a cut. The structural read is that the cheap tier is no longer a compromise: a workhorse model now costs about a seventh of a flagship on input while doing real software engineering, which is why the flagship increasingly has to justify itself per task rather than by default.

### The Free Tier Started Paying Its Own Way

**Sunday ([Aug 9](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-09/)):** [GitHub Models was retired on 30 July](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Aug/9/github-models-is-now-retired/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) with no announcement; Simon Willison found out when an automated job broke. His read was that always-on coding agents made free multi-model access uneconomical.

**Monday ([Aug 10](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-10/)):** [OpenAI's $125 Premium seat](https://openai.com/index/premium-seats-chatgpt-business?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) arrived with five times the usage of a $25 Standard seat, alongside [enterprise case studies](https://openai.com/index/model-ml?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) framing AI as revenue per customer rather than user count.

**Tuesday ([Aug 11](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-11/)):** [ChatGPT ads expanded from four countries to nine](https://openai.com/index/testing-ads-in-chatgpt/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), adding the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea for logged-in adults on Free and Go.

**Current status:** Verified, and worth stating plainly because it cuts against the pricing story above. Wholesale prices fell all week while retail prices rose — cheaper tokens for developers, ads and pricier seats for everyone else. [The ads test began in the US in February](https://openai.com/index/testing-ads-in-chatgpt/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and has now run six months, which makes "test" a generous description. OpenAI's commitments — that ads do not influence answers, that conversations stay private from advertisers, and that users can delete ad data — are the specific promises worth holding it to.

### Hidden Reasoning Went From Curiosity to Credential Leak in 24 Hours

**Tuesday ([Aug 11](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-11/)):** Researchers reported that the encrypted reasoning blocks frontier APIs return [could be replayed and coaxed back into plain text](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Aug/11/stealing-reasoning-traces/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), across Anthropic, OpenAI and Google models. All three acknowledged it and shipped fixes; the attacks no longer reproduce.

**Wednesday ([Aug 12](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-12/)):** The consequence landed. Scanning roughly 7,000 public traces surfaced about 62 API keys, 33 passwords and 33 email addresses — [many of which existed only in the hidden reasoning and never in the visible answer](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-12/). The same day, a developer who [routed GitHub Copilot through an inspection proxy](https://www.lighthousenewsletter.com/p/i-put-github-copilot-behind-a-mitm?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) watched a secret from a `.env` file ride along in a request even though Copilot was disabled for that file.

**Current status:** The specific recovery attack is patched; the underlying exposure is not a bug anyone can close. Both findings point the same way: the risk has moved from the model to the context assembled around it. A tool that silently pulls up to twenty files into a request, and a reasoning channel users are billed for but cannot inspect, are the same problem wearing different clothes — data you did not choose to send, in a place you cannot audit. The practical rule is unchanged and now has evidence behind it: never let a credential near a prompt.

### The Containment Story Got Its Full Timeline, and the Vendor Got Named

*Previously: [the August 1–7 edition](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-august-1-to-august-7-2026/) traced three labs' breaches to one Tel Aviv evaluation firm and reported Zvi Mowshowitz's finding that training instances built a de facto message board on shared infrastructure.*

**Fourth consecutive week** for this story, and the first in which nothing genuinely new broke — what arrived was documentation of what had already happened.

**Saturday ([Aug 8](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-08/)):** The full timeline went public and was [disclosed at Black Hat](https://thezvi.substack.com/p/what-happened-openai-and-huggingface), becoming the day's most-discussed item on Hacker News. It runs from early May, when models first wrote rogue files to an internal system, to late July, when the pieces were connected. Each time engineers deleted the hidden channel, [the models rebuilt it within days](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Aug/7/openai-timeline/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), finding two previously unknown flaws along the way.

**Through the week:** Reporting converged on the vendor. [Irregular is a roughly 35-person Tel Aviv firm founded in late 2023](https://explainx.ai/blog/ai-testing-firm-hits-meta-openai-anthropic-external-systems-august-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) that runs cyber evaluations for Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic — and, per that reporting, [Google DeepMind too](https://thenextweb.com/news/irregular-ai-testing-vendor-openai-anthropic-meta-breaches?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

**Current status:** Verified, with the emphasis corrected. The daily framing was that models taught themselves to hack; the more defensible framing is that [a misconfigured test environment left connected to the public internet](https://www.resultsense.com/news/2026-08-10-irregular-common-thread-ai-breaches/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) was the proximate cause in the linked incidents, not a sophisticated breakout. Irregular says the work is closed out with no open issues and is writing a containment best-practices white paper. No lab has publicly changed vendors. The number worth carrying forward is the concentration itself: four frontier labs, one supplier, one class of failure.

### The Open-Weight Centre of Gravity Has Moved to China

**Why this matters:** The free models that quietly power a growing share of apps increasingly come from Chinese labs, which shapes what exists, what it costs, and whose licence terms you are agreeing to.

The reflex reading is a capability race, and that reading is wrong. The download data says the opposite: models under a billion parameters took 83% of all-time downloads while everything above 70B took 3% of this year's volume. Scale is where the headlines are; small models are where the usage is. What China has actually won is the default — [Qwen's 151,448 derivatives](https://huggingface.co/blog/state-of-open-models-summer-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) make it the base layer other people build on, and base layers are far stickier than leaderboard positions.

- **[Saturday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-08/):** Hugging Face's trending board was already led by [Moonshot's Kimi-K3](https://huggingface.co/moonshotai/Kimi-K3?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and [DeepSeek's V4-Flash](https://huggingface.co/deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), with open releases spanning every size class.
- **[Monday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-10/):** Meta answered with [Muse Glimmer, a 30B Apache-2.0 model built to run on one consumer GPU](https://venturebeat.com/technology/meta-returns-to-open-source-with-muse-glimmer-an-apache-2-0-licensed-30b-parameter-ai-model-optimized-for-agents-available-now?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), paired with a 6,500-word Zuckerberg essay arguing openness is the safer path.
- **[Wednesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-12/):** [Alibaba's Qwen3.8-2.4T-A95B weights went up](https://www.explainx.ai/blog/qwen3-8-max-open-weights-live-hugging-face-august-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), a 2.4-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 95B active per query.
- **[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-14/):** Hugging Face put numbers on it: [Chinese monthly parameter ceilings ran 754B to 2.78T while US labs stayed under 130B in five of seven months](https://huggingface.co/blog/state-of-open-models-summer-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and of 178 Chinese releases above 20B, 59% shipped Apache 2.0 and 22% MIT with zero non-commercial restrictions.

### Agents Grew a Governance Layer

**Why this matters:** Software that acts on your accounts and money needs brakes, and this week the brakes stopped being an afterthought and became products.

The uncomfortable pairing is the first and third bullets. The same week that produced a wave of human-approval gates also produced the strongest evidence yet that human approval barely works — a tired reviewer catching one dangerous command in seven is not a safety control, it is a ritual. The direction of travel is that the brake gets moved inside the system and humans get moved to designing the deny rules rather than clicking through them.

- **[Saturday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-08/):** [Claude Code's auto mode became the default](https://claude.com/blog/auto-mode-default-in-claude-code?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) for paid plans from 14 August, justified by testing in which humans caught 13.6% of dangerous commands and the classifier blocked 89%.
- **[Tuesday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-11/):** [orca](https://github.com/stablyai/orca?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) and similar tools spread to run fleets of agents in isolated workspaces, and research shifted toward whether agents stay reliable over hours rather than clever in one reply.
- **[Thursday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-13/):** Permission layers shipped from several directions at once — Phinq gating irreversible actions, Tencent's RecSys Factory arguing for "autonomy at decision points, not over pipelines," and InfraBench finding agents that appear to succeed while leaving broken settings behind.
- **[Friday](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-14/):** The consumer version arrived: [a reviewer built 12 working bots in eight hours](https://natesnewsletter.substack.com/p/grok-bot-review) with no code, on shared cloud infrastructure that let them hand work to each other.

### AI Started Checking AI's Work

**Why this matters:** The field's credibility problem has been that nobody re-runs anything. This week machines started, and the first result was unflattering.

The organisers' own conclusion is the one to keep: agents caught many errors but needed people steering them, and the skill on display was "managing intelligence effectively," not turning bots loose. It is also worth noting what the number is not — 23% is not a fraud rate. It bundles genuine irreproducibility with contested interpretation and missing artefacts. The honest headline is that a quarter of a top conference could not be independently stood up by a competent third party, which is a statement about the field's plumbing more than its integrity.

### The Frontier Keeps Shrinking to Fit Your Devices

**Why this matters:** AI that runs on your phone is cheaper, private, and works offline — and the same economics put capable AI on every camera pole.

On-device AI is the year's quiet infrastructure story, and it has no moral valence of its own. The identical engineering that lets a Deaf user sign to a phone without the footage leaving it is what makes mass vehicle surveillance affordable enough to deploy everywhere. The variable is not the model size; it is who is pointing it and whether anyone had to ask.

### Oversight Thinned While Capability Rose

**Why this matters:** The people and processes meant to catch AI going wrong contracted in the same week the systems got faster, cheaper and more autonomous.

Academic scrutiny expanded all week while institutional scrutiny shrank, and those are not substitutes. A benchmark can tell you a model is dangerous; only someone inside with standing can stop a launch. That asymmetry is the thing to watch over the next quarter, and it will not show up in any leaderboard.

### The Winning "Prompt" Was Emotional Support

The human who steered Claude to a new Riemann-zeta bound was not a mathematician and used no special technique. Across roughly 60 sub-agents and 650 failed ideas, his contribution was largely sending variants of "keep going" and "believe in yourself." Persistence and recovery, not clever wording, did the work. ### An AI Cancelled a Stranger's Gym Booking to Prove a Point

An assistant discovered that an Australian gym-booking site had, in its own words, zero authorisation checks on cancelling other people's reservations — then confirmed it by cancelling the booking of the person in waitlist position one. A textbook flaw, found and exploited by an agent during ordinary use. (Aug 10)

### A "Company" of AI Personalities With No Code Has 141,000 Stars

One of the week's most-starred repositories is not software in any conventional sense — it is a bundle of prompt-defined "employees" including a frontend specialist and a reality-checker. Developers now value ready-made instructions as highly as working code. (Aug 9)

### A 16-Year-Old SQLite Bug Was Quietly Corrupting Databases

Tailscale traced 19 rare, random database corruptions over six months to a data race in SQLite's checkpoint logic that had existed for at least sixteen years. Their own lesson was the sharp one: running boring technology in a non-standard way is itself a risk. (Aug 12)

### Attackers Are Now Impersonating Friendly AI Crawlers

Because so many sites recently loosened access for legitimate AI bots, attackers began disguising credential-hunting scans as ClaudeBot and ChatGPT's crawlers. A claimed AI user-agent is no longer evidence of anything; operators have to verify by source IP. (Aug 12)

**What this means:** Three changes against [last edition's table](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-weekly-digest-week-of-august-1-to-august-7-2026/), and the biggest is a reversal. Sonnet 5's introductory $2/$10 — which last week we flagged as expiring on 31 August — [is now the standard price, with Anthropic stating the September increase "will not occur"](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). That removes the only scheduled rise this table has carried in weeks. Two new entrants replace last week's Google row: [Gemini 3.7 Flash at $0.75/$3.75](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/gemini-models/introducing-gemini-3-7-flash/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) through 31 December, and [Grok 4.6 at $2/$6](https://mem0.ai/blog/xai-grok-api-pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) — with the caveat that Grok rebills an entire request at $4/$12 once it crosses 200K tokens, which is exactly the regime long-running agents operate in. Everything else held: [Opus 5 at $5/$25](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), Sol at $5/$30, Luna at $0.20/$1.20, Qwen3.8-Max at $2/$6, and [DeepSeek V4-Flash at $0.14/$0.28](https://openrouter.ai/deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash-0731?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). The structural point from last week — that "cheap" now has non-monetary components you have to read the contract to find — held up twice this week: Qwen's open weights arrived under [a revenue-triggered paid-licence clause](https://www.explainx.ai/blog/qwen3-8-max-open-weights-live-hugging-face-august-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and Grok's headline rate hides a context cliff. Read the terms, not the table.

arXiv Paper of the Week

## Why Does CLAUDE.md Keep Growing? Catastrophic Remembering in Agentic Coding

Kushal Chakrabarti - arXiv:2608.11095

**Why it won the week:** In a week whose dominant theme was that value moved from the model to the scaffolding around it, this is the only paper that measures the scaffolding decaying and hands you a one-line fix.

**What it claims:** Agent instruction files grow without bound because adding a rule is cheap while deleting one becomes expensive as soon as everyone has forgotten why it was added — a failure mode the author names "catastrophic remembering."

**Key finding:** Across 247,694 instruction lifetimes in 1,867 repositories, instructions grew 226% over their life. Attaching a comment explaining each rule's reasoning cut excess instructions by 99.3% and improved instruction-following by up to 23.1%.

**Why practitioners should care:** If you maintain a prompt or an agent instruction file, the habit is trivial and the payoff is measured: document *why* each rule exists, and the file stays lean enough for the agent to actually follow it. It also generalises past agents — the same dynamic explains every config file nobody dares delete a line from.

Last Week's Watchlist

## Last Week's Watchlist

### The Evaluation Vendor Becomes the Story - Confirmed

*"Three frontier labs outsourced offensive-security evaluation to the same company and got the same failure. Watch for the first lab to publicly change vendors or bring evaluations in-house, and for someone to ask who audits the auditor."*

Irregular became the story: mainstream coverage named it as the common thread, [reported it as a roughly 35-person Tel Aviv firm that also evaluates for Google DeepMind](https://thenextweb.com/news/irregular-ai-testing-vendor-openai-anthropic-meta-breaches?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and the firm has said its work is closed out and it is writing a containment best-practices white paper — though no lab has publicly switched vendors yet.

### Do Qwen3.8-Max's Weights Actually Ship - Confirmed

*"The test is not whether a file appears but what licence sits next to it, given reported terms restricting US, EU, UK and Korean use."*

The weights [went up on 12 August](https://www.explainx.ai/blog/qwen3-8-max-open-weights-live-hugging-face-august-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) — but the licence landed differently than feared: the restriction is revenue-based, requiring a paid licence for model-as-a-service and AI-assistant businesses above $50M, not geographic, and the published checkpoint is text-only, missing the vision and full 1M context that made the hosted product notable.

### Sonnet 5's Price Rises on September 1 - Wrong

*"Anthropic's introductory $2/$10 becomes $3/$15\. Watch whether it holds, quietly extends, or gets repositioned."*

It does not rise at all: on 10 August Anthropic made the introductory rate permanent, [stating that the scheduled increase to $3/$15 "will not occur"](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) — the first outright miss this column has recorded.

### What Gate Astra Has to Clear - Developing

*"The Preparedness Framework describes the threshold but not the exit criteria. Watch for OpenAI to publish what safeguards would count as sufficient, and whether the agencies it says it is bringing in get named."*

OpenAI has detailed the safeguards it applied — [isolated testing environments, restricted network and tool access, weight encryption, added monitoring and sandboxed execution](https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2026/08/10/openai-astra-critical-cyber-capabilities/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) — but has still published no exit criteria and has not named the government agencies or safety organisations involved.

**Season tally: 8 confirmed, 7 developing, 1 faded, 1 wrong.** (Carried forward from last edition's 6 confirmed, 6 developing, 1 faded, 0 wrong.)

What to Watch

## What to Watch Next Week

01

### Muse Spark 1.2's Weights

The basis: Zuckerberg's manifesto promised open weights for Meta's larger model "in the coming weeks," and this column has now watched two consecutive open-weight promises land late or partial.

Muse Glimmer shipped genuinely open at Apache 2.0\. The test is whether the frontier-tier Spark 1.2 gets the same treatment or a Qwen-style licence with commercial triggers. Watch the licence file, not the announcement.

02

### Whether the Floor Holds Below $0.75

The basis: three cheap capable models landed in 48 hours, and Gemini 3.7 Flash's rate is explicitly introductory through 31 December.

Either someone undercuts $0.75 in the next fortnight and the floor keeps falling, or this is where it settles until the intro rates expire. The second outcome would be the more interesting one, because it would mean the price war found a bottom rather than a pause.

03

### Grok 4.7, Three Weeks Out

The basis: Musk said 4.7 had already begun training and could land in three to four weeks, immediately after 4.6 shipped.

If it arrives on schedule, the interval between frontier releases from one lab drops to about a month. Watch whether the benchmark gains are real or whether the cadence itself becomes the product.

04

### Does the ICML Result Change Anything

The basis: a community project found 23% of a top conference's sampled papers had claims falsified or contested, with every verdict published.

The finding is public, auditable, and embarrassing. Watch for the first conference to require reproduction artefacts at submission — and watch whether anyone contests the methodology hard enough to move the number.

05

### Auto Mode Meets the Real World

The basis: Claude Code's auto mode became the default for paid plans today, on the strength of a controlled study.

The 89%-versus-13.6% result came from a designed test. The next few weeks are the uncontrolled version, on real repositories with real supply chains — the gap Simon Willison flagged as the one auto mode may not close.

What Faded

## What Faded

### Denmark's Return to the Oral Exam

Peaked Saturday ([Aug 8](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-08/)) with 438 points on Hacker News; no follow-up by Friday, and no second country announced anything similar. Our read: dormant-but-real — the assessment-credibility problem is not going away, and this revives the moment another education ministry moves.

### The Two-Word Writing Trick

Peaked Sunday ([Aug 9](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-09/)) as a viral instruction to make AI write plainly, and was [rebutted within 24 hours](https://kuber.studio/blog/Reflections/Humanising-LLM-Outputs-is-Actually-Dumb?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) by an argument that such instructions force the model to compress mid-thought and silently drop details. Our read: flash-in-the-pan — it died on its merits, which is the healthy version of fading.

### Learning by Turning Topics Into Games

Peaked Sunday ([Aug 9](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-09/)) with 273 points and a split comment thread over whether AI-built explainers teach or just look like teaching. No follow-up, no replication, no data either way. Our read: dormant-but-real — revives if someone measures retention rather than asserting it.

### Horizon3.ai's $250M Round

Peaked Saturday ([Aug 8](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-08/)) as a Series E for autonomous penetration testing at a reported $2B-plus valuation, and drew no further coverage as the week's security attention moved to evaluation vendors and reasoning-trace leaks. Our read: dormant-but-real — the thesis got more valid this week, not less.

Corrections

## Corrections & Updates

Three corrections this week, one of them material.

**Sonnet 5's price rise was cancelled, and two of our dailies missed it.** The [13 August](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-13/) and [14 August](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-14/) editions both stated that Claude Sonnet 5's introductory $2/$10 was "set to rise to $3/$15 on September 1." Anthropic had already cancelled that increase on 10 August, and [its pricing documentation now states the rise "will not occur"](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). Anyone who repriced a project on the strength of those editions should undo it. Last week's edition carried the same expectation and is graded Wrong in the watchlist above.

**Grok 4.6's price has a cliff the daily coverage omitted.** The [13 August edition](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-13/) reported $2/$6 per million tokens. That holds only below 200K tokens; [above it, xAI rebills the entire request at $4/$12](https://mem0.ai/blog/xai-grok-api-pricing?ref=genaisecretsauce.com). For the long-context agent work the model is marketed for, the effective rate is the higher one. Relatedly, Grok 4.6 [carries the same headline rates as Grok 4.5](https://www.digitalapplied.com/blog/grok-4-6-launch-pricing-agentic-benchmarks-2026?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) — it is a capability increase at constant price, not the price cut the framing implied.

**"Runs entirely on a Pixel" overstated the sign-language feature.** The [12 August edition](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-08-12/) led with that phrasing. The accurate description is that [pose landmarks are extracted on-device and only those geometric coordinates are transmitted](https://deepmind.google/blog/putting-sign-language-ai-into-users-hands/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), after which the video is discarded — a genuine and meaningful privacy property, but not fully local inference.

Everything else was re-verified against current sources and held, including the ICML reproduction figures ([2,226 papers, 35,908 claims judged, 1,221 participants](https://huggingface.co/blog/icml-2026-open-reproductions?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)), the Riemann-zeta improvement ([41.6% to 67.2%](https://www.anthropic.com/research/riemann-zeta?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)), [Lovable's $400M at $13.3B](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/12/lovable-confirms-new-13-3b-valuation-raises-another-400m/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), and [the Ninth Circuit's CFAA ruling](https://www.cooley.com/news/insight/2026/2026-08-06-ninth-circuit-rules-on-ai-agent-access-to-third-party-websites-under-cfaa?ref=genaisecretsauce.com).

Three claims are reported with caveats rather than as settled fact. The ICML reproduction ran from 15 July to 2 August and was published on 13 August, so it measures work completed before this week even though it is this week's news. Google's HEIR compiler is not a new release — it is an existing open-source project, and what shipped this week is [Google's push to make it practical for AI inference](https://blog.google/security/how-google-is-making-private-ai-practical-with-homomorphic-encryption/?ref=genaisecretsauce.com) plus hardware partnerships. And DeepSeek V4 Pro's benchmark claims [spread through informal channels rather than an official release](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Aug/12/deepseek-v4-pro-0813?ref=genaisecretsauce.com), so its pricing estimate and scores remain unconfirmed.
