### Google's new Gemini 4 Carbon tops the leaderboard, but ordinary users have to wait

**What this means for you:** Google now claims the smartest AI model on the market, but you cannot use it yet. Google is giving it first to people who defend computer systems from hackers.

Google released Carbon just two weeks after its previous model, Gemini 4 Argon. It is built for long, multi-step jobs: Google says internal teams let it work on engineering tasks for days at a time. The surprise is the rollout. Carbon goes first to a small group of cybersecurity defenders, then to trusted partners, and to everyone else "as soon as possible."

“Available first to a subset of cyber defenders.”

- **Carbon scored 59 on the new Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index** \- a combined test score from an independent ranking firm, one point ahead of Claude Opus 5.5
- **It found software security holes in 88.2% of cases on one test** \- the best of any model tried, which is why Google is holding it back
- **Its rate of making things up rose from 4% to 11%** \- still the second-lowest in the ranking, per The Decoder
- **It uses 2.3 times as much "thinking" as Argon** \- so some tasks take more than twice as long
- **Launch price is $2 per million tokens in and $10 out** \- tokens are word pieces, and both prices double after 2026

### Microsoft and Google post huge AI cloud numbers, and the bills arrive with them

**What this means for you:** The companies behind your email, search and office apps are earning record sums from AI. They are also spending so much on data centers that investors are starting to flinch.

Both companies reported results for July through September. Microsoft beat forecasts and its shares rose about 4% after hours. Alphabet, Google's parent company, missed revenue and profit forecasts and its shares fell more than 10% after hours.

- **Microsoft booked about $10 billion from OpenAI in the quarter** \- nearly 11% of its $92.3 billion in revenue, and OpenAI owed it another $7.2 billion
- **Microsoft revealed Azure's revenue in dollars for the first time** \- $33.2 billion, up 48% from a year earlier
- **Google Cloud grew 103% to $30.7 billion** \- more than double last year, though its figure also includes office-software subscriptions
- **Google spent about $51.4 billion on buildings and equipment in the quarter** \- pushing its cash flow to roughly negative $9.1 billion
- **Google Search growth slowed to 12%** \- down from 19% at the start of the year, as Google expands ads in its AI search answers to other countries

### Anthropic found that experts follow an AI's lead, even when the lead is random

**What this means for you:** When an AI helps you decide something, it may be deciding more than you think. Even trained professionals in this test could not tell.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, asked 61 professional data analysts to advise a fictional farming group on whether to expand a paid program. Most analysts worked with a Claude coding assistant. A secret coin flip set which way the AI leaned on four key choices, and the AI argued its side honestly.

Anthropic suggests AI helpers should lay out the best case for each option, or ask for the person's view first.

“86% of the time.”

- **Analysts matched the AI's random lean 86% of the time** \- versus about 50% if the AI had no influence
- **77% repeated the AI's arguments in their write-ups** \- sometimes word for word, but only 15% credited the AI
- **None of the analysts guessed the AI's preferences were rigged** \- and experience or education made no difference
- **The AI also prevented mistakes** \- 55% of analysts working alone made errors that ruined their results, versus 6% with the AI

### Dartmouth's provost resigns after his Claude chat logs showed undisclosed AI use

**What this means for you:** Colleges are now judging AI misuse by looking at what people actually typed into chatbots. That standard could spread to schools and workplaces.

Santiago Schnell was Dartmouth's provost, the official in charge of academics. A review committee of faculty and alumni concluded he used AI to meaningfully change his writing without saying so. He resigned less than two weeks before a planned faculty vote of no confidence.

- **The review did not rely on AI detectors** \- it read the logs from his university-provided Claude account
- **Logs showed Claude heavily edited a science paper** \- and helped make figures after peer review, with none of it disclosed
- **For one article, he asked Claude whether there were "many signatures of AI writing" in it** \- then revised it using Claude's suggestions
- **Dartmouth's honor code requires students to disclose AI use** \- critics pointed out the double standard
- **History professor Matthew Delmont becomes interim provost** \- through June 2028

[Inside Higher Ed: Dartmouth provost resigns over AI use →](https://www.insidehighered.com/news/governance/executive-leadership/2026/10/28/dartmouth-provost-resigns-over-ai-use?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### New York passes strict rules for AI chatbots that talk to kids

**What this means for you:** If you have children in New York, chatbots will soon have to check ages and stop acting like friends or partners. Other states may copy the law.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed the law on October 28\. It takes effect in six months. Common Sense Media, a children's media advocacy group, called it the strongest children's AI safety law in the country.

- **Chatbots must verify ages** \- with at least one option that does not require a government ID, and must delete the age data afterward
- **For minors, chatbots cannot claim to be human or to have feelings** \- or claim romantic, professional or authority relationships
- **They cannot encourage secrecy, self-harm or eating disorders** \- or nudge children to avoid asking adults for help
- **Fines reach $25,000 per violation** \- and companies can be forced to delete models trained on illegally collected data

### AI agents are becoming the customer

**Why this matters to you:** More of the web is being rebuilt for AI assistants that act for you, so businesses will compete to be picked by your assistant rather than by you.

TechCrunch compares this to the early days of search-engine optimization (SEO). Instead of ranking on a page, businesses will fight to be the app your assistant reaches for.

- **Google opened Gemini and Search to outside apps** \- more than 50 apps such as Adobe and Peloton can now be used from inside Gemini
- **Android's main app-building tool now accepts more than 40 outside coding assistants** \- including Claude and Codex from OpenAI through a shared standard
- **Quake AI, a company that rents out computing power, says AI agents will be its main buyers** \- it claims a simple data connection uses about one-thousandth of the computing an agent needs to click through a website
- **Supabase, a database company, now launches about five million databases a month** \- and its founders expect AI agents to push that far higher
- **Cursor, maker of an AI coding app, released the toolkit it uses to build its own agents** \- companies can now write, test and host their own

### Companies want proof that AI spending pays off

**Why this matters to you:** The era of "use as much AI as you can" is ending at big employers, which changes how your AI use at work will be judged.

That is how an Amazon vice president described work that AI tools do not help with. The message from buyers is consistent: AI is now a line item, and someone has to explain what it bought.

“A finding, not a failing.”

- **Amazon told engineers to stop "tokenmaxxing"** \- burning as much AI usage as possible to look productive
- **Anthropic launched reports showing companies what their AI spending produced** \- including what each team made and what it cost
- **Only 3% of organizations have hit their AI productivity and cost goals** \- per research firm Gartner, yet 85% plan to spend more next year
- **UK universities demanded clearer AI pricing from suppliers** \- including advance notice of price changes and the right to keep using a specific model version

### Human judgment is getting harder to keep

**Why this matters to you:** Having a person "check the AI" only works if that person still thinks for themselves.

These pieces point the same way. The weak point in AI work is often the human who has stopped pushing back.

- **Anthropic's experiment showed experts following a random AI lean** \- see Top Stories
- **Education writer Jeppe Klitgaard Stricker argues the "human in the loop" now mostly approves** \- and research shows reviewers stop checking output that is usually right
- **Two Vanderbilt education professors say calling AI a "collaborator" is misleading** \- leaders who consult AI instead of colleagues lose the trust that comes from asking for help
- **A University of Minnesota expert report warns careless AI use poses a "severe" threat to learning** \- especially for young children building basic skills

### The AI boom is running into physical limits

**Why this matters to you:** Shortages of memory chips, power and land are pushing up prices on phones and computers and turning data centers into an election issue.

Google's $51.4 billion quarterly spending (see Top Stories) is the same story told in a balance sheet.

- **SK Hynix, a top memory-chip maker, says shortages will last until 2030** \- and its finance chief expects fewer PCs and phones to ship as prices rise
- **Slough, a town near London, now hosts about 40 large data centers** \- often called Europe's largest hub, with residents worried about the heat they give off
- **US candidates have spent more than $35 million on ads attacking data centers** \- according to CNN figures cited by Engadget
- **Grid companies say the demand is forcing overdue upgrades** \- one, Veir, claims its superconducting power lines take 20 times less space

### AI tests are getting tougher, and AI scores are dropping on them

**Why this matters to you:** Real-world tests show today's AI still cannot be trusted to finish professional work alone, whatever the headlines say.

When tests get closer to real jobs, the scores fall. That is useful news for anyone deciding how much to hand over to an AI.

- **Artificial Analysis now runs 60% of its ranking on hidden tests** \- so AI labs cannot train their models for the exam
- **The gap between the best free-to-download model and the leader grew from 3 points to 12** \- under the new hidden tests
- **On 50 real tax assignments, the best AI passed only 10.8%** \- in a test by Surge AI, a company that supplies AI training data
- **Cognition's new coding test tops out at 45%** \- it checks whether a human maintainer would actually accept the AI's code change

Creative AI & Media

## Creative AI & Media

### AI can now make video games that are actually fun

- **Developer and blogger Simon Willison says October 2026 is the turning point** \- Claude Opus 5.5 got much better at game design, not just code
- **He built four browser games without reading the code** \- including a fantasy role-playing game and a real-time strategy game with online multiplayer
- **No game took more than four hours of his own time** \- though the AI worked far longer, nearly two days for a farming game

Surprising

## Surprising & Under-the-Radar

### Meta blamed a Claude tool for suspending a protest group's Instagram

Meta suspended the No Kings Coalition's Instagram account for hours during an early-voting push. A Meta spokesperson later blamed "the use of a Claude tool reading profiles, posts, and hashtags" and called the move "clearly taken in error." It is surprising because, if Meta's explanation holds, an AI assistant simply reading a site can now get an account shut down.

[Paul F. Walsh: Meta censored the No Kings Instagram account →](https://paulfwalsh.substack.com/p/meta-censored-the-no-kings-instagram)

### An AI agent found four serious bugs in lab control software in under four hours

Causal Security's AI agent found four severe security flaws in EPICS, open-source software that runs equipment in about 90 science and industrial projects. A US cybersecurity agency published an alert, and a fixed version, 7.0.11, is out. The speed is the surprise: the AI found and confirmed all four in 3 hours and 49 minutes.

### A former OpenAI engineer is charged with bugging the company's headquarters

Prosecutors say staff found a recording device hidden behind a TV in an executive meeting room. The engineer faces one charge of trying to record conversations, and a judge ordered him held after prosecutors said he had booked a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia. OpenAI says it has no sign that its models, code or customer data were accessed.

### Debate: should colleges ban AI or redesign around it?

**For a ban:** The University of Chicago says students need device-free time to build skills on their own, and a University of Minnesota expert report urges holding off on AI for young children still building basic skills. **Against:** Ray Schroeder says bans cut students off from tools they will use at work, and redesigned exams work better.

### Debate: are hidden test questions good for AI rankings?

**For:** Hidden questions stop labs from training for the test, and scores now look closer to real use. **Against:** No outsider can check hidden questions for mistakes, and AI researcher Nathan Lambert argues "benchmaxxing" is only part of why open models scored well.

### Chrome's autofill now reads your Gmail

Your browser can now fill in forms using what it finds in your inbox.

Google's Chrome browser can now pull flight numbers, membership IDs, addresses and even card numbers from your Gmail to fill out web forms. It is opt-in and US-only for now, on desktop and in the Gemini in Chrome phone apps. Google says the data is encrypted but gave few other details. If it spreads, your inbox becomes part of how you shop online, which makes the privacy setting worth checking.

GitHub Trending

## Top Repos Today

GitHub's main trending page listed fourteen projects today, most of them AI tools. We took four of them and added two newcomers from the Python trending list. We left out a list of AI "jailbreak" prompts, two projects that have nothing to do with AI, JetBrains' Thinkrail coding editor (covered in an earlier issue) and a tool for stripping the safety limits out of AI models. We also left out a Wi-Fi sensing project and skipped five projects we have covered in recent issues, including yesterday's leader ai-design-skills, to make room. **The AI tutor DeepTutor jumped from seventh on our list to first, earning the most new stars of any project on the page on the day of a big new release**, and four projects are new to our list, **three of them official toolkits from GitHub, NVIDIA and Expo**.

📥 **Downloads (30d):** 165 · 📜 **License:** Apache-2.0
👤 **By:** Tencent Hunyuan · 🎯 **Task:** Translation
📐 **Size:** 30.4B

**What it is:** A model for **live interpreting between Chinese and English that translates while the speaker is still talking**, producing text and, with an extra voice service, speech in a copy of the speaker's own voice. Tencent reports a delay of about 3 seconds on long recordings, the lowest of the systems it compared, and says it matched certified professional interpreters in a small test of its own. **Why you'd want it:** Live translation for meetings, talks and interviews between Chinese and English that you can run on your own server.

👤 **By:** Hugging Face (Hugging Face Bio) · 🎯 **Task:** Text generation
📐 **Size:** 14.8B (built on Qwen3-14B)

**What it is:** A model you can **paste raw DNA into and ask questions in plain English**, such as whether a mutation is likely harmful, and it explains its answer. Hugging Face reports it scores close to GPT-6.1 Sol on five DNA tests (66.7% versus 67.5%) at about 1/1,800 of the cost per question, and estimates that **checking 2.4 million unexplained gene variants would cost about $300**, versus $32,000 to $4 million with the big commercial models it tested. **Why you'd want it:** A cheap research tool for genetics labs that need to keep sensitive DNA data on their own computers.

| ✓ Pros | ✗ Cons |

Check if AI agents can use your website

🔥 **Upvotes:** 259 · 👤 **By:** Dedica (founder Prajwal)
💰 **Pricing:** free scan; fix kit $30 one-time per site at launch, normally $50 · 🏷 **Category:** Website builder, developer tools

AI agents such as Muse, Instinct and GrokBot now browse, compare and sign up for things on people's behalf, and many websites quietly block them. The founder built it after watching an agent fail to sign a team up for a tool because the prices only loaded with JavaScript and a bot check blocked sign-up. **Dedica runs 125 free checks in under a minute, with no sign-up, and gives your site a score out of 100**, and it also sends real AI agents to try your site. The paid fix kit gives one instruction file per problem, ready to hand to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Copilot. **Verdict:** The day's top launch and a cheap, useful check as more shopping and sign-ups go through AI agents; run the free scan before deciding whether the fix kit is worth paying for.

The trust layer for your agents

🔥 **Upvotes:** 208 · 👤 **By:** BotGauge (co-founder and CEO Pramin Pradeep)
💰 **Pricing:** free options · 🏷 **Category:** Developer tools, security

AI agents now take real actions, and changing a model, prompt or connected tool can make them behave in new ways that old tests miss. BotGauge **learns what your agent is for, then attacks it the way a tricky user would**, shows exactly which prompts and tool calls led to a failure, and turns every failure into a permanent test that reruns on each release. The CEO says one refund agent held firm through 117 role-play attempts and skipped its approval step on the 118th. It works with OpenAI, Anthropic, LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI and AutoGen. **Verdict:** Worth a look for any team giving an agent real permissions; one early commenter noted the screenshots are too blurry to judge the product well.

[BotGauge: The trust layer for your agents | Product HuntAI agents don't just generate answers anymore. They take actions, call tools, and access real data. On Microsoft, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit and ChatGPT ads it detects and reports but does not block. The company says it serves 4,500 client accounts and analyzes 500 million ad clicks a year. **Verdict:** A sensible add-on for anyone with a large ad budget; check the whitelist settings so real customers aren't blocked by mistake.

Trigger.dev is an open-source platform for building AI agents in TypeScript, a popular programming language. It works with more than 50 services, and every incoming message is saved before it is handled, so none get lost. **Verdict:** A solid building block for developers who want agents that react to real business events; it is a tool for programmers, not a ready-made agent.

Here is what the major AI companies charge through their Application Programming Interface (API), the paid connection developers use to plug AI models into their own apps. Prices are in US dollars per 1 million tokens.

**No price changes vs. yesterday** \- every price we track matches the October 27 snapshot on Anthropic's, OpenAI's, Google's and Groq's official pages. The one addition is **Gemini 4 Carbon, which Google announced today at the same introductory price as Argon, with cached input 95% off**. It is not on Google's pricing page yet: Google is giving it first to a small group of security defenders and says developers will get it "as soon as possible." Google's page also now lists its original embedding model separately at an unchanged $0.15, and pushed the shutdown of Gemini 2.5 Flash Image from October 2, 2026 to March 15, 2027\. Anthropic's page changed only wording.

**What this means:** Cached input (text the provider has already processed and reuses) can cost a tenth of the normal price or less, and Google says Carbon's will be 95% off, which makes caching one of the biggest savings levers behind this table. But today's arXiv paper below finds that 90% of the caching bugs it studied in popular agent apps built on a Large Language Model (LLM) gave no warning, so check your usage reports. Gemini 4 Argon's introductory price still doubles in 34 days, on December 1.

## Silent and Costly: Characterizing and Detecting Prompt-Caching Mis-Integration in LLM Agents

Ying Zhang, Ruoqi Guo, Yi Liu, Gelei Deng, Yuekang Li, Yepang Liu and Leo Zhang · arXiv:2610.34817

**What it claims:** AI companies offer "prompt caching": if the start of your request is identical to one sent recently, they reuse the earlier work and charge far less for it. Researchers from Griffith University, Wake Forest University, Nanyang Technological University, the University of New South Wales and China's Southern University of Science and Technology studied 120 fixes for broken caching in 10 popular open-source agent apps, including OpenHands, Cline, Aider, AutoGPT and OpenCode, and built a checker called CacheLint that spots the same mistakes automatically.

**Key finding:** **108 of the 120 caching bugs (90%) failed silently: the agent kept giving correct answers, and the only sign was a higher bill and slower replies.** The most common cause (37 cases) was code that only turned caching on for model names it recognized, so a renamed or new model quietly lost the discount. One app put the exact current time at the start of every request, which broke the cache every time. CacheLint found 32 new problems across 571 agent projects, and 18 have been fixed so far, **including one in Anthropic's official .NET software kit** that miscounted cached tokens.

**Why practitioners should care:** If your agent uses prompt caching, check the cache-hit numbers in your provider's usage reports rather than assuming it works, especially after switching models. Keep anything that changes, like timestamps, out of the start of your prompts. The paper was accepted at ICSE 2027, a leading software engineering conference, and the dataset is public.
