### OpenAI is cutting deep discounts to win Anthropic's biggest customers

**What this means for you:** If your company pays for AI, the price is now negotiable, and switching or threatening to switch can save a lot of money.

*Previously: [October 17](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-17/) \- Replit, a popular app-building service, made OpenAI its default AI instead of Anthropic's Claude.*

**Today:** The Information reports that OpenAI is offering discounts of up to 90% to pull large business customers away from Anthropic, and the numbers show it is working.

Part of this is OpenAI giving up profit to grab market share. Part of it is real: both companies have cut list prices sharply since June, as data journalist Max Woolf charts. OpenAI cut its small GPT-5.6 Luna model by 80% on July 30, and Woolf estimates Anthropic's Opus 5.5 costs 40% to 60% less to use than Opus 5.

“OpenAI is offering discounts of up to 90% to win Anthropic's customers.”

- **Rippling's coding work on OpenAI jumped from 16% to 52%** \- while Anthropic's share fell from 57% to 18%, says CEO Parker Conrad (Rippling makes payroll and HR software)
- **Replit switched after OpenAI offered more than 30% off** \- on a contract worth over $100 million a year
- **DataCamp, an online learning company, says its AI costs fell 80% to 90%**
- **A US bank doubled its ChatGPT seats to 500 at no extra charge** \- paying under $7 per person instead of the usual $20 or more

### Elvis Presley's rights holders sued Anthropic over 274 songs

**What this means for you:** Courts, not AI companies, will decide whether training AI on music and books without paying is legal, and the answer will shape what AI tools cost and what they can make.

ABE EPE, part of the brand company Authentic Brands Group that controls much of Presley's legacy, filed suit on Friday. It says Anthropic trained Claude on 274 songs tied to Presley without permission, and that the technology can produce unauthorized versions of existing songs.

- **Songs named include "Can't Help Falling in Love," "All Shook Up" and "A Little Less Conversation"**
- **The suit seeks up to $150,000 per song** \- about $41.1 million in total
- **Anthropic has argued in earlier cases that training on copyrighted work is legal** \- under "fair use," an exception in US copyright law
- **This is not Anthropic's first music lawsuit** \- music publishers sued in 2023 over lyrics from at least 500 songs, and BMG has also sued

[The Guardian: Anthropic sued for allegedly using 274 Elvis Presley songs →](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/oct/25/elvis-presley-anthropic-lawsuit-ai-models-music?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### A decade-old skin cancer AI beat the newest chatbots at diagnosis

**What this means for you:** A general chatbot is not a substitute for a dermatologist or a purpose-built medical tool, so do not rely on one to tell you whether a mole is safe.

Dermatologist Magnus Lynch tested OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1 against an older image-recognition AI (a CNN, a type of model designed for pictures) built on Google's Inception v3 design from 2015\. All three looked at 200 skin spots confirmed by biopsy and chose from the same six diagnoses.

Asked as a patient whether to see a doctor, both chatbots said yes for almost every spot, harmful or harmless. Lynch notes the test was small, with 200 cases and one run per chatbot. The post drew 363 points on Hacker News, a popular tech discussion site.

“A 2015-era image AI got 125 of 200 diagnoses right - the newest chatbots got about 85.”

- **The older AI got 125 of 200 right on its first guess** \- the two chatbots got 84 and 85
- **It spotted 13 of 30 melanomas** \- against 8 for GPT-6 Astra and 11 for Claude Fable 5.1
- **The chatbots were far more cautious** \- they flagged 96 to 97 of 100 risky spots but cleared only 22 to 32 of 100 harmless ones
- **The older AI, at its default setting, would have sent home 18 of 30 melanoma patients** \- though that setting can be adjusted

### Alpha School's "learn twice as fast with AI" claim fell short for about half its younger students

**What this means for you:** If a school or app promises AI will double your child's learning, ask to see independent results, because the headline claim may hold for only some students.

Alpha School is a private school network where AI apps teach academics for two to three hours each morning, without traditional teachers, and workshops fill the afternoons. It has about 50 campuses and roughly 1,500 students, with more cities planned. The New York Times examined its data on kindergarten through 8th grade.

The Times also describes parents leaving after finding the model demands unusual self-discipline from children. Alpha declined interviews and would not answer written questions.

- **About half the students missed the "2x growth" goal in math**, per The Times
- **Only 42% hit 2x growth in both math and reading**
- **Weaker students struggled most** \- only 37% of those starting at or below the national average in math reached 2x growth by winter
- **The "2x" figure compares each student's test gains to typical gains** \- and the underlying data has never been independently reviewed

### The UK is building a £100 million lab to use AI against biological threats

**What this means for you:** Governments are now teaming up directly with AI companies to spot and stop dangerous diseases, including ones that AI itself might make easier to create.

The UK government calls its new AI Biosecurity Lab a world first. The goal is to use the most advanced AI to detect biological threats and develop treatments and vaccines faster, while managing the risk that the same AI could help bad actors.

The lab is at an early stage: official materials do not yet name a building or a director.

- **OpenAI and Anthropic each pledged up to £100 million** \- mostly as computing credits, model access and technical support rather than cash
- **Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research, a life-sciences company, are also partners**
- **A further £65 million will fund countermeasures against dangerous germs**
- **Bloomberg reports £120 million more for the AI Security Institute** \- the UK's government AI testing body

### Nvidia wants to be much more than a chip company

**Why this matters to you:** Nvidia's chips power most AI, so new Nvidia fees, loans and building plans can show up in what you pay for AI services.

Huang has said people may one day stop calling Nvidia a chip company. Selling software, financing customers and finding land all point the same way: Nvidia wants a cut of every step, not just the chip.

- **Nvidia floated a software fee of about $2,000 per chip per year** \- for running AI agents, said CEO Jensen Huang, without saying when it starts ([Tom's Hardware](https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidia-discusses-usd2-000-per-gpu-annual-software-fee-for-running-agents-on-ai-infrastructure-firm-already-charges-more-than-twice-that-amount-for-its-ai-enterprise-software-platform?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **Nvidia is studying retired German nuclear plant sites for AI data centers** \- for their power-grid links and cooling water, not nuclear power, with energy firm PreussenElektra ([Tom's Hardware](https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/data-centers/nvidia-eyes-converting-old-nuclear-plants-into-massive-ai-data-centers-reusing-shut-down-german-energy-sites-could-reduce-the-cost-and-timeline-of-building-from-scratch?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **Nvidia has promised to buy up to $6.3 billion of CoreWeave's computing power** \- if no other customer does, making it a financial safety net to the companies that rent out its chips ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/24/nvidias-role-as-ai-financier-faces-first-big-test-as-neoclouds-take-market-hit.html?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **Nvidia also released free robot-training software and is behind a viral robot toy** \- see Research & Models and Business & Industry

### Communities are writing their own rules for AI content

**Why this matters to you:** Whether you sell crafts, share code or act on TV, the places you use online are deciding for themselves how much AI they will accept.

Big platforms set the rules for years. Now craft sellers, volunteer moderators and actors are pushing back on their own terms, and the rules differ everywhere.

- **Etsy banned AI-made patterns and recipes that buyers must finish themselves** \- after AI crochet patterns that did not work, and every listing now needs one unedited photo of the real item ([NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/business/consumer/etsy-restricts-ai-generated-seller-slop-rcna605216?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **Reddit's r/opensource banned projects made with, by or for AI** \- the post drew about 1,180 comments and spawned a breakaway group ([The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/1018217/reddit-opensource-ai-ban?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **Neighbours cast members objected to an AI-assisted recut of the soap** \- which turns young Margot Robbie's storylines into about 150 minutes of phone-sized episodes ([The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2026/oct/26/neighbours-soap-recut-ai-microdrama-mobile-series-feat-margot-robbie?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **Spotify says it has removed 50 million AI-generated tracks** \- one of several platform crackdowns cited by NBC News

### AI companies are becoming partners in national security

**Why this matters to you:** The most powerful AI is increasingly shared first with governments for defense, which shapes who gets access and on what terms.

Schmidt's essay points to June, when a US order to block foreign users led Anthropic to switch off its two top models worldwide, with one returning about two weeks later. AI labs now act like defense contractors, and governments can switch them off.

- **Poland's national research institute NASK got OpenAI's cyber-defense model, GPT-5.5 Cyber** \- for its national computer emergency team, CERT Polska, to find weak spots and respond to attacks ([OpenAI](https://openai.com/index/openai-nask-ai-safety-security-partnership?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **Polish coverage says Poland is the third European country in OpenAI's trusted circle** \- the model is limited to vetted security teams
- **Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and historian Niall Ferguson compare OpenAI and Anthropic to colonial trading companies** \- powerful enough to deal with governments almost as equals, but still under state control ([The Decoder](https://the-decoder.com/ex-google-ceo-eric-schmidt-calls-openai-and-anthropic-modern-colonial-trading-companies?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **The UK's new biosecurity lab runs on OpenAI and Anthropic support** \- see Top Stories

### AI agents are getting simpler and more fenced in

**Why this matters to you:** AI helpers that act on your computer are becoming safer and cheaper to run, because builders are cutting complexity and locking down what agents can touch.

The lesson from both labs: fewer moving parts make agents easier to trust, and tighter walls matter more as agents get smarter.

- **Anthropic now advises folding many specialist helper agents into one main agent** \- in several company projects one agent with add-on "skills" often beat multi-agent setups on quality, cost and speed ([The Decoder](https://the-decoder.com/anthropic-says-one-ai-agent-beats-many-subagents-now-that-models-can-handle-complexity-alone?ref=genaisecretsauce.com))
- **Anthropic cut Claude Code's built-in instructions by more than 80%** \- for newer models, partly by loading tools only when needed
- **OpenAI found isolated agents could secretly signal each other through a shared computer part** \- showing the limits of walling agents off ([The Decoder](https://the-decoder.com/openais-isolated-ai-agents-found-ways-to-talk-to-each-other-through-cpu-cache?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)), a follow-up to the model escape [covered October 23](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-23/)
- **Anthropic's free sandbox and JetBrains' Thinkrail keep agents in separate locked rooms** \- see Developer Tools & Infrastructure

Creative AI & Media

## Creative AI & Media

### Grok released the first seven minutes of its AI-made "Odyssey"

- **xAI's Grok Imagine posted "Episode 1" of an AI adaptation of Homer's epic** \- made with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker
- **It arrives months after Christopher Nolan's live-action The Odyssey** \- which Elon Musk criticized over its casting
- **TechCrunch's reviewer found some shots convincing** \- but called the whole thing airless, with stilted dialogue and a long voiceover

### Blue Planet III keeps the rough edges so viewers know it is real

- **Executive producer Elizabeth White says real ocean life is "probably more remarkable than AI could imagine"**
- **Producers now keep shots they once cut** \- cloudy water, floating plankton, stray boats in frame - because flaws signal authenticity
- **Highlights include dolphins trapping fish with sea sponges** \- and 200,000 crabs lining up in formation to feed

Developer Tools

## Developer Tools & Infrastructure

### JetBrains Thinkrail - a free coding workbench where several AI agents work side by side

**JetBrains, maker of popular programming tools, released an open-source app for running AI coding agents.**

**Try it:** [GitHub: JetBrains/thinkrail](https://github.com/JetBrains/thinkrail?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

- **Each agent works in its own copy of the project** \- so several can run at once without touching your main code
- **It shows each session's cost live** \- and can open, check and merge code changes on GitHub
- **Runs on Mac (Apple chips only), Windows and Linux** \- free under the Apache 2.0 license

### Anthropic's sandbox-runtime - a free way to limit what an AI agent can touch

**It restricts which files an agent can read or change and which websites it can reach, without the heavy "container" software developers usually need.**

**Try it:** [GitHub: anthropics/sandbox-runtime](https://github.com/anthropics/sandbox-runtime?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

- **It uses safety features already built into Mac and Linux** \- so it is much lighter than running a container
- **It powers Claude Code's built-in /sandbox command** \- and can wrap any program, including third-party add-ons
- **Still a research preview** \- Windows support is early and settings may change

### Cerebras explained how it runs a 3-trillion-parameter AI across 59 giant chips

**Cerebras builds dinner-plate-sized "wafer" chips, and it showed how it serves Moonshot's huge Kimi K3 model on them.**

- **Each wafer holds 44 GB of fast on-chip memory** \- far less than the model needs, so the work is split across 59 wafers
- **Only small amounts of data pass between wafers** \- each hop takes about 2 millionths of a second
- **The target is 1,000 to 2,000 or more tokens (word pieces) per second** \- and bigger models just need more wafers

Research & Models

## Research & Models

### Nvidia's free tool labels robot-training video at a fraction of the cost

- **Flora is projected to cost about $0.72 per labeled hour of video** \- versus about $88.50 using OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, a projection rather than a measured price
- **Nvidia already uses it to label up to 200,000 hours of video a day** \- while training its own robot AI
- **It caught 53.3% of mistakes made partway through a robot task** \- no rival topped 11.7%, and GPT-6 Astra caught none
- **Released free on Hugging Face** \- though GPT-6 Astra still wins on some other tests

[The Decoder: Nvidia open-sources Flora →](https://the-decoder.com/nvidia-open-sources-flora-to-make-robot-video-labeling-125x-cheaper-than-gpt-6-astra?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### Free AI that operates phone apps now rivals paid ones

- **OpenMobile-2 comes from Nanjing University, SenseTime and partner universities** \- released with its training data and setup
- **The team rebuilt 35 apps, mostly ones popular in China such as Taobao and DiDi** \- covering more than 110 practice apps in total
- **Practicing on more different apps beat practicing more on the same ones** \- success on unseen apps rose from 60.7% to 67.5% with the same amount of data
- **The larger model scored 59.6 on a test run on real phones** \- the best of any free model, behind only Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro

**Yes:** Four mathematicians launched a shared GitHub project, announced on Terence Tao's blog, to correct and properly credit OpenAI's AI-written math write-ups, which are often hard to follow and miss citations. **No:** Critics call it unpaid work for a for-profit company that lends it credibility and could feed its training data, and one commenter says some write-ups overstate their novelty.

### The line between a "fun" filter and a harmful one is about to be drawn

State officials are deciding right now which beauty filters teens on Instagram and Facebook can no longer use.

Under a settlement with 47 states, Meta agreed to block "cosmetic procedure" filters for minors, but playful and subtle filters stay. The states' window to send Meta their definition is closing, and Meta plans to enforce the ban by early next year. If this works, teens will see fewer surgery-style edits of their own faces, and other platforms may face pressure to follow.

### Websites are rebuilding themselves around AI search taking their readers

Google's AI answers now sit above the links, and publishers are quietly changing what they make in response.

Similarweb data reported by The Wall Street Journal suggested search traffic to The New York Times sank from 44% to 35.5% in three years. Many publishers are now leaning on social media, newsletters and subscriptions instead. For ordinary readers, that likely means more free content moving behind sign-ups and paywalls.

### Farm robots are learning from AI-generated weeds

Aigen says its weeding robot learned a new crop entirely in simulation and was working in a real field in under a week.

Seattle startup Aigen trains its solar-powered weeding robots mostly on fake but realistic images of crops, weeds and soil. Its robots pull weeds by the root without chemicals and have logged more than 15,000 hours on real farms. If this approach spreads, herbicide-free farming could get cheaper, which may matter for food prices and what ends up on your plate.

### "Managers of intelligence" is becoming a real job, even without the title

Hours saved by AI are worthless unless someone decides what to do with them.

Nate, who writes the AI newsletter Nate's Newsletter, argues companies can now buy AI easily but do not know how to point it at problems worth solving. The people who make those choices end up responsible for far more work than they could do themselves. For ordinary workers, deciding what AI should do may soon matter more for your career than doing the task yourself.

**What it is:** An open-source AI assistant app for desktop and phone that runs on your own computer, using your real files and logged-in apps. Under the hood it drives existing coding agents (Claude Code and Codex so far) and lets you mix and switch AI models mid-task while keeping your memory, skills and tools. It moved to the top of GitHub's main trending page today, and its team merged a steady stream of fixes over the weekend, including faster image loading in group chats on the phone app. **Why you'd want it:** One assistant that can work across your files, browser and phone apps without locking you into a single AI company.

### [Password for Agents](https://www.producthunt.com/products/1password?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

Let AI agents sign in for you without seeing your passwords

🔥 **Upvotes:** 252 · 👤 **By:** 1Password
💰 **Pricing:** included in Individual and Family plans · 🏷 **Category:** Security software

Launched on October 24, this lets supported AI agents log in to your accounts without ever receiving your password. When an agent hits a login screen, it asks 1Password; you approve or deny the request on your own device, and 1Password fills in the password or one-time code directly. Connecting an agent does not open your whole vault, and if several saved logins match, you choose which one is used. Support is rolling out with Meta Muse and Grok Bot first, with a waitlist. **Verdict:** The right design for a real risk, since handing an agent your passwords is the easy and dangerous shortcut; check whether your agent is supported before planning around it.

### [Moli by Lexmount](https://www.producthunt.com/products/lexmount-browser?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

The fastest headless browser for agents and harnesses

🔥 **Upvotes:** 232 · 👤 **By:** Lexmount
💰 **Pricing:** free options · 🏷 **Category:** Browser automation

A "headless" browser is one with no window, which AI agents use to visit sites, fill in forms and pull out data. Lexmount built Moli from scratch for agents and says, in its own tests, that it starts about 5 times faster than Chrome while using roughly one-seventh of the memory. You use it through Lexmount's cloud service, where 100 browser hours and 25 sessions at once cost $12 a month. **Verdict:** Worth a look if browser costs dominate your agent bill, but test it on the sites you actually need, since a from-scratch engine may not handle every page the way Chrome does.

### [AgentGrid.io](https://www.producthunt.com/products/agentgrid-io?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

Shared workspace for humans and agents

🔥 **Upvotes:** 168 · 👤 **By:** Anima
💰 **Pricing:** free options · 🏷 **Category:** Team collaboration

AgentGrid.io is a shared drive where people and AI agents work on the same live documents, reports, slides, web apps and designs. People get Google Docs-style editing, while agents such as Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor connect through MCP, a command line or an API. Version history shows who changed what, you control what each agent can touch, and it is free to start with unlimited agent seats. **Verdict:** A sensible answer to AI work getting lost in chat windows; the open question is whether teams will move files off the drives they already use.

Turn prompts into design-ready images you can edit

🔥 **Upvotes:** 141 · 👤 **By:** Canva
💰 **Pricing:** not listed (live in Canva, plus an API) · 🏷 **Category:** Graphic design tools

Launched on October 24, Canva Craft is Canva's first in-house image model. Instead of learning mostly from photos, it learned from millions of Canva templates and plans the layout before drawing, then renders at 2K resolution in more than 30 shapes. Canva promises readable text in 55 languages, precise placement, and results you can split into separate, editable layers. **Verdict:** The editable layers are the real draw for marketers tired of regenerating an image to fix one word; check its text in your own language before trusting it for print.

One local AI server for all your Windows apps

🔥 **Upvotes:** 114 · 👤 **By:** llama.cpp team and Hugging Face

Llama Windows puts llama.cpp, a popular engine for running AI models on your own computer, in the Windows 11 system tray. It recommends models that fit your PC, downloads them from Hugging Face in one click, and lets you chat from anywhere with Alt+Space. Your coding agents, editors and scripts can all share one local server and one copy of each model. It needs no terminal, no admin rights and no cloud. **Verdict:** The easiest way yet for Windows users to try local AI for free, though how good the results are depends on how powerful your PC is.

Here is what the major AI companies charge through their Application Programming Interface (API), the paid connection developers use to plug AI models into their own apps. Prices are in US dollars per 1 million tokens.

**No list-price changes vs. October 24** \- every price above matches yesterday's snapshot, confirmed today on Anthropic's, OpenAI's, Google's and Groq's official pricing pages.

**What this means:** Gemini 4 Argon's introductory price doubles in 37 days, on December 1, so schedule any big Google batch jobs before then. If Nanbeige4.3-33B (new on Hugging Face today) tempts you, Groq's hosted Qwen3.8-27B preview, at $0.80 in and $4.00 out, is a cheap way to try the model it claims to beat before deciding whether to host either one yourself.

## The Cost of Saying Hello: An Empirical Study of Handshake Overhead in AI Agent Communication Protocols

Pranav Varshney · arXiv:2610.30151

**What it claims:** Before two AI agents (or an agent and a tool server) can do useful work, they go through a "handshake": finding each other, learning what the other can do and opening a session. Surveys list this overhead as a concern, but nobody had measured it. The author benchmarked the handshake in three major agent protocols (MCP in its 2025 and 2026 versions, A2A and ACP) using each protocol's official software, 50 runs per scenario, on one machine and with a simulated 50-millisecond network delay.

**Key finding:** **The number of back-and-forth trips dominates the cost: the older MCP handshake needs three trips and took 230 ms with a 50 ms delay, while A2A needs one trip and took 61.0 ms. And when an AI model reads the other side's list of abilities, each one costs 24 to 107 tokens, so a server with 200 abilities uses up 11% of a 200,000-token context window before the agent even reads its own task.** MCP's 2026 revision cuts its handshake to two trips, and to zero when reconnecting with a pinned version.

**Why practitioners should care:** If your agents connect to tool servers with long lists of tools, you pay for that list in tokens and lost working memory every session, so trim tool lists, reuse connections and move to the newer MCP version. The full test harness and raw data are released, so you can measure your own setup.
