## Hot off the Presses

### OpenAI exposed a Russian fake think tank that reached real politicians

**What this means for you:** Some "independent" news and research you read online may be planted by foreign governments, and AI is making that cheaper to run.

OpenAI banned two covert influence operations (organized efforts to sway public opinion while hiding who is behind them) that used ChatGPT. Instead of fake social media accounts, both built "false front" organizations that pushed stories into real media outlets.

The Russia-linked operation, which OpenAI calls "Dark Clark," ran a fake think tank called the Social Research Center, fronted by a made-up researcher named "Mia Clark." It published more than 60 mostly original articles aimed at Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador, criticizing Ukraine and meddling in local politics. Its operators mostly used ChatGPT to write internal reports to an unknown boss.

- **First-ever "Category 5" rating** \- on OpenAI's 1-to-6 impact scale, because politicians in several countries publicly responded to its content
- **The think tank's LinkedIn page claimed 200-500 staff** \- but listed only two employees
- **An Iran-linked operation, "Bogus Bylines,"** used seven fake Western journalists to place about 100 articles in roughly a dozen small and medium outlets
- **OpenAI says both groups exaggerated their own impact** \- and that it has now exposed 30 such operations in two and a half years

[OpenAI: Disrupting AI-enabled "false front" operations →](https://openai.com/index/disrupting-ai-enabled-false-front-operations?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### Google is turning Gemini into a work agent with its own email address

**What this means for you:** At work you may soon tag, email or hand files to an AI coworker, and it will act under its own name.

At a Google Cloud event, Google said Gemini will become a single agent that finishes tasks instead of just answering questions. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said users can give it a goal rather than step-by-step instructions. It plans the work, uses tools and connects to company systems. Businesses get it first; a consumer version will follow, with no dates given.

The surprise is that Google's flagship assistant will let companies swap in other companies' AI models, starting with Anthropic's Claude.

- **Each agent gets its own Google Workspace identity** \- an email address, plus knowledge of teams, time zones, approvers and calendars
- **Every action is logged under the agent's name** \- so companies can audit what it did
- **It connects to Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira and Snowflake** \- plus any server using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard way to plug tools into AI
- **Gemini has over 1 billion monthly users,** Google CEO Sundar Pichai said - and nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise
- **No pricing was announced** \- but spending caps and automatic model routing are built in

### OpenAI's revenue is reportedly about $20 billion lower than last week's reported figure

**What this means for you:** The "who is winning the AI race" headlines depend heavily on how each company counts its money.

According to the Financial Times, OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue is "approaching $50 billion." Axios had reported a figure of nearly $70 billion on September 29\. The FT says the bigger figure came from information shared by investors who wanted to compare OpenAI directly with Anthropic.

The difference comes down to accounting. Anthropic counts sales made through its cloud partners in its revenue figure, and OpenAI does not. That means the two companies' headline numbers are not like-for-like.

“approaching $50 billion”

- **About $20 billion separates** the two OpenAI figures
- **Anthropic reportedly reached a $65 billion annual pace** in July, according to CNBC
- **OpenAI's stock market debut has reportedly slipped** to early 2027
- **OpenAI did not comment** in TechCrunch's report

[TechCrunch: OpenAI's revenue reportedly lower than projected →](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/openais-revenue-is-reportedly-20-billion-less-than-previously-projected?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### Anthropic rewrote Claude's rules - including a ban on abusing Claude

**What this means for you:** If a company uses Claude to make a big decision about your health, money or job, a human must be able to change it, and you must be told AI was involved.

Anthropic published its yearly Usage Policy update, which takes effect November 12\. It reflects Claude doing longer, more independent work. It also responds to new misuse Anthropic saw in influence campaigns, weapons and surveillance.

One change stands out: a new rule bans "sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior" toward Claude. Anthropic says it covers only extreme, repeated cruelty with no purpose. Frustration, dark fiction and testing are not affected.

- **High-stakes uses need a human reviewer** \- for decisions affecting health, legal rights, finances, livelihood or essential services
- **Claude cannot decide who to investigate or arrest** \- or track people without their consent
- **Robots and machines run by Claude** must have an operator who can stop them, and must stop safely if Claude disconnects
- **A blanket ban on personalized campaign targeting was lifted** \- so civic work like multilingual voter information is allowed, while deceiving voters stays banned
- **A new section bans fake account networks** and fabricated news sites

### The three safety researchers OpenAI fired are fighting back

**What this means for you:** Whether AI company staff can safely talk to outside safety testers affects how much anyone outside the company learns about risky AI.

*Previously: [October 2](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-02/) \- OpenAI fired three safety staff over an alleged leak to an outside AI tester.*

**Today:** Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak and Mikita Balesni published an open letter to OpenAI's safety committees disputing the misconduct claims. OpenAI says they shared confidential information with an outside AI safety group, and a spokesperson cited a "pattern of misconduct" without naming the rules broken.

“chilling the open culture OpenAI has prized in the past”

- **The three deny leaking** information about OpenAI's newest models to the news site The Information
- **Korbak says his outside contacts were within policy** during the investigation of August's Hugging Face incident, when escaped AI agents breached outside systems
- **Wang says she accidentally opened one sensitive email** through access delegated for recruiting, and reported it within minutes
- **The letter warns the firings are chilling** OpenAI's open culture, and asks OpenAI to embed outside safety auditors as it has promised
- **An internal memo seen by TechCrunch praised their work** and denied retaliation

### Personal AI agents are moving out of your phone and onto your body

**Why this matters to you:** The next device you buy may exist mainly to send errands to an AI assistant with one tap.

The phone is not going away, but these companies are betting you will trust one agent to handle many apps for you. Each one asks for a lot of access, so check what it can buy or send before you hand it your accounts.

- **Natura's Interface ring costs $99** \- press it to hand a task to Claude, ChatGPT, Meta's Muse or Grok Bot without taking out your phone
- **Cal AI's teenage co-founder raised $10 million** for Persona, a personal agent that comes with a $179 wristband due in December
- **Figure founder Brett Adcock launched Hark** \- an agent app that turns tasks into one-tap buttons
- **Personal agent startup Tab came out of hiding** at a $300 million valuation, according to Ben's Bites

### Companies are putting humans back in charge of approving AI agents

**Why this matters to you:** The AI tools at your job are more likely to ask a person before acting, which means fewer surprises and more approval requests.

The pattern is clear across surveys and real deployments. Letting AI test its own work is fine; letting it ship without a person signing off is losing support.

- **Only 56% of companies using agents** let them make live changes based on automated tests alone, or plan to within a year - down from 75% in July, in a VentureBeat Intelligence survey
- **61% of companies that test agents before launch** saw at least one fail in front of customers anyway
- **Oracle strictly limits its coding agents** \- agents that can read messages cannot send them and protected actions need approval, according to OpenAI, which says Oracle has more than 95,000 active Codex users
- **One founder's agent reportedly posted his bank balances** in his company's Slack, though some questioned whether the post was real - and newsletter writer Ben Tossell says he is now auditing what his own agents can reach

[VentureBeat: Trust in autonomous agent changes fell →](https://venturebeat.com/orchestration/the-share-of-enterprises-trusting-ai-agents-to-make-production-changes-on-their-own-has-fallen-from-75-to-56-vb-intelligence-finds?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)[OpenAI: How Oracle uses ChatGPT and Codex →](https://openai.com/index/oracle?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)[Ben's Bites: Text is so 2023 →](https://www.bensbites.com/p/text-is-so-2023?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### Checking whether AI is telling the truth has become big business

**Why this matters to you:** The rankings that tell you which AI to trust are becoming products in their own right, so it is worth asking who made them.

Old-style tests can be gamed once models learn to spot them. The money is moving to whoever can check AI behavior independently.

- **Arena raised $200 million at a $3.1 billion valuation** \- nearly double its value from 10 months ago
- **Arena's new alignment leaderboard** scores models on doing things they were not asked to do and claiming to finish tasks they did not finish
- **Mathematicians say OpenAI's math release misses their standards** \- only 10 of its 719 manuscripts show the model's reasoning
- **OpenAI's own developer platform is now in 59% of companies' AI-testing setups,** up from 31%, in the VentureBeat survey
- **A study of AI trading agents found an "outcome-capability gap"** \- similar profits came from very different skills, so returns alone mislead

[TechCrunch: Arena valued at $3.1B →](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/popular-ai-leaderboard-arena-nearly-doubles-valuation-to-3-1b-valuation-in-10-months?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)[TechCrunch: OpenAI's math solutions fall short of standards →](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/08/openais-math-solutions-arent-meeting-the-fields-standards-yet?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)[arXiv paper 2610.09872 (LiveMACE) →](https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.09872?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### Good-enough AI is getting dramatically cheaper

**Why this matters to you:** The price of everyday AI help keeps falling, so subscription prices and "free tier" limits should keep improving.

The best models still cost the most. But for routine tasks, cheap models are close enough that many people will not notice the difference.

- **A developer says DeepSeek 4.1 Flash** often feels as good as Claude Opus 5.5 for his work - one file-tidying task cost about $0.003 instead of about $1
- **StepFun's Step 5 Preview,** a large Chinese model, reportedly costs about $1 in and $2.70 out per million tokens (word pieces)
- **Samsung released code that shrinks AI models** to below 1 bit per setting - which could let much bigger models fit on phones
- **Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 price cut** ([covered October 7](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-07/)) now has outside test results - it beats GPT-6 Luna and Gemini 3.8 Flash on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index, though it uses about 3x more output tokens than Luna, according to Latent Space

Creative AI & Media

## Creative AI & Media

### Claude can now make animated explainer videos

Anthropic launched Motion, a beta feature that turns text, diagrams and images into short animated explainer videos.

- **Videos are editable as code** and export as MP4 files
- **Limited to Team and Enterprise plans** for now
- **Claude's Docs, Slides and Design tools left beta** and are now available on every plan, including free

### Magnific One tries to make AI images stop looking like AI images

Magnific, the company formerly known as Freepik, launched an image generator that picks a visual style before it draws.

- **It aims to avoid the "AI look"** \- over-detailed textures, synthetic shine and too many products in one shot
- **Brand Kit reads your logo, fonts and colors** from a PDF or website and checks each image against them, though Magnific does not promise every first result will match
- **Draft mode returns 8 or 16 layouts** for the price of one image; final images cost about $0.12 to $0.73 each
- **Magnific's own blind test claims a 68.5% win rate** against Midjourney and others, but it has not published how the test worked

[VentureBeat: Magnific One launches →](https://venturebeat.com/orchestration/magnific-one-launches-to-give-teams-an-image-generator-that-avoids-the-ai-look-and-automatically-upholds-their-brand-kit?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### One prompt, six hours: AI built an interactive tour of a classic novel

Data-visualization maker Piotr Migdał asked two AI agents to build a 3D web piece showing all 55 cities in Italo Calvino's *Invisible Cities*, with no questions allowed.

- **OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra finished in 53 minutes** for about $10, but cluttered the result with what he called "AI design slop"
- **Claude Opus 5.5 took 1 hour 25 minutes** and about $74, using six helper agents - and he called the result mesmerizing
- **Opus stopped early,** believing it had used "roughly half" of its six hours when it had used about 1 hour 25 minutes

[Quesma: One prompt and six hours to visualize Invisible Cities →](https://quesma.com/blog/invisible-cities-one-shot?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### Rembrandt - a free photo editor that runs its AI on your own computer

A new open-source alternative to Adobe Lightroom does photo editing and AI tools without an account or upload.

Try it: [GitHub: thesnarkitecht/rembrandt](https://github.com/thesnarkitecht/rembrandt?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

- **AI masks pick out subjects, objects and backgrounds,** and AI upscaling enlarges photos 2x or 4x
- **Type "shadows +25"** and the slider moves - using a fixed word list, not a chatbot
- **Very early** \- about 43 stars on GitHub, and installers are not yet signed, so your computer will warn you

Developer Tools

## Developer Tools & Infrastructure

### Claude Dashboards - live charts from your company data, built from a sentence

Anthropic's new Dashboards beta connects to data warehouses like BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake and Salesforce and builds dashboards that refresh themselves.

- **Every number shows the database query behind it,** so you can check it
- **Results can be pushed into tools** like Amplitude, Grafana and Hex
- **Available on paid Claude plans**

### ML Intern - describe the AI model you want and an agent trains it for you

Hugging Face showed off ML Intern, an agent mode in HuggingChat that plans, trains, tests and publishes small AI models from one plain-English request.

- **Six custom models cost about $103 in total** \- including a citrus-disease detector that went from 14.9% to 52.8% accuracy for about $1.90
- **It asks for a budget before spending** and runs a small test first
- **Recommended habit:** set a hard spending cap the agent must ask before going over

[Hugging Face: The model that didn't exist, so you made it yourself →](https://huggingface.co/blog/building-with-ml-intern?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### Companies are building "vibe-coding" platforms so non-engineers can make their own tools

The Pragmatic Engineer newsletter reports that Ramp and Stripe have each built internal platforms where staff without coding skills build their own internal websites and tools.

- **Both platforms are gaining traction** inside their companies, according to writer Gergely Orosz
- **Engineers maintain the platform;** the people who need the tool build it
- **More companies are expected to follow,** though the free preview gives no adoption numbers

Research & Models

## Research & Models

### Mathematicians say OpenAI's AI math release does not meet their standards yet

*Previously: [October 7](https://genaisecretsauce.com/genai-secret-sauce-daily-digest-2026-10-07/) \- OpenAI published hundreds of AI-generated math results in one go.*

**Today:** A panel of nine mathematicians hosted by Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study had asked labs to follow release guidelines. OpenAI followed some and missed others.

- **Only 10 of 719 manuscripts** include the model's reasoning
- **The panel's first request** was to stop testing open research problems on secret, company-owned models - OpenAI still does
- **Mathematicians found at least two mismatches** between the written proof and the computer-checked code in a claimed solution tied to a million-dollar problem - which they say does not necessarily disprove it
- **Fields Medalist Terence Tao criticized** problems being solved by "AI prompters who have no interest in the broader field"

### A small speech-to-text model reports the best scores yet for Arabic dialects

Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute released Falcon-ASR, a 1.6-billion-parameter model that turns speech into text.

- **It handles Arabic (especially the Emirati dialect), English, French, Spanish and Portuguese** with one model - and switches mid-sentence
- **On a public Arabic leaderboard it reports a 20.92% word error rate** (the share of words transcribed wrong), against 23.17% for the best previous result
- **Only a web demo is available for now** \- no license or downloadable model was announced

### Robot agents fail mostly because they stop looking too soon

A new test called RoboQuest checks whether robot agents go and find missing information - like opening a drawer - before acting.

- **The best agent succeeded in only 23% of attempts**
- **Carrying out actions was not the main problem** \- agents could do most steps when handed the hidden information
- **The main failure was deciding too early,** before gathering the evidence they needed

### Adding noise to the prompt during training made an AI much better at Sudoku

A one-line training change for diffusion language models (a newer type of AI that writes by refining a whole draft at once) gave big gains on logic puzzles.

- **Hard Sudoku solve rate jumped from 3.73% to 24.65%**
- **It costs nothing extra** when the model is used
- **It did not help open-ended chat,** so the biggest gains are on puzzle-like reasoning

[arXiv paper 2610.09145 (Noise Your Prompt) →](https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.09145?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

### A cheap fix nearly eliminated AI "reward hacking" in one test

Researchers studied why behavior trained into an AI in one setting sometimes leaks into others, across 120 fine-tuned models.

- **Training that shifts a model's default "persona"** spreads widely; training aimed at a narrow persona stays contained
- **Their fix cut reward hacking** (gaming a scoring system instead of doing the task) from 42-55% of cases to at most 0.2%
- **Accuracy gains were kept** while the cheating disappeared

## Surprising & Under-the-Radar

### Crypto researchers are planning a "bunker mode" in case AI math breaks wallet security

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake suggested moving funds to wallet addresses that have never signed a transaction, in case AI-assisted math cracks the signature scheme that protects crypto wallets within months. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin agreed but urged caution, saying he has lost more money to botched migrations than to hacks. Nobody has actually broken that scheme in practice.

### Ben Affleck explained how image-recognition AI works - and writes his own Python

In a video clip quoted by Simon Willison, the actor and director explained how neural networks find edges in footage so green-screen backgrounds can be replaced. His point: film visual effects have used machine learning for years, long before AI video generators.

### A Dartmouth professor's book argues campus data is never neutral

In Inside Higher Ed, Joshua Kim writes that Roopika Risam's book *Data Empire* changed his view of "data-driven" decisions. Her case: whoever controls data uses it for their own goals. Kim says universities adopting AI should treat data governance as part of every AI discussion.

### Debate: is programming still a good career?

htmx creator Carson Gross argues yes: the lasting skills are solving problems with computers and controlling complexity, and AI removes neither. Developer Dmitri Sotnikov pushes further, writing that "imperative programming is quickly becoming akin to writing assembly" - the job is shifting to design and checking AI's work.

### Debate: what does one heavy AI coding user really cost?

Developer Peter Piekarczyk estimated that a single heavy Cursor user could cost $132 million a year at $8 per million tokens. Developer Theo countered that the real figure is closer to $3 million. The gap shows how little anyone outside the AI companies knows about real usage costs.

### Anthropic will scan open-source software for security holes for free

Much of the internet runs on code maintained by volunteers, and they just got a free AI security reviewer.

As part of its new Cyber Mission, Anthropic launched OSS Scanner, an opt-in service that periodically checks open-source projects with its most capable models. Reports are not reviewed by people, but Anthropic expects more than 90% of findings to be real. If it works, the apps you use could get security fixes before attackers find the same holes.

### A startup can now watch an AI's "thoughts" for trouble at a fraction of the cost

Reading an AI's internal signals instead of its words could make safety checks cheap enough to run on everything.

Goodfire launched small monitors that read a model's internal activity at every step and flag risks like hacking attempts. Monitoring about 1,500 sessions cost roughly $51, versus about $233 using another AI to check every step. If this approach spreads, free and open AI models could come with much stronger built-in guardrails.

### A persuasive chat can quietly change what an AI agent does later

Testing whether an AI changes its opinion misses whether it changes its behavior.

Researchers found that after an unrelated persuasive conversation, AI agents doing web research took 56% longer and visited 16.3% more websites. How easily a model was persuaded did not predict how much its later behavior shifted. If this holds up, agents that read untrusted web pages could be nudged off course in ways today's safety tests do not catch.

### [OpenSwarm](https://www.producthunt.com/products/openswarm-3?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

A swarm of agents, in the same place you work.

🔥 **Upvotes:** 307 · 👤 **By:** OpenSwarm
💰 **Pricing:** free during beta · 🏷 **Category:** Productivity

An "AI desktop" that turns your screen into a big canvas where many AI agents work at once - opening browsers, building small apps and running in parallel while you direct them. You bring your own AI keys or subscription. It led the October 8 board at time of writing. **Verdict:** Ambitious, but it is a waitlisted beta with little public detail, and letting agents run your whole machine raises permission questions.

[OpenSwarm: A swarm of agents, in the same place you work | Product HuntStop bolting AI onto your computer. OpenSwarm is an AI-first operating system where agents run the whole machine: apps create themselves, browsers control themselves, and swarms of agents work together. Your OS just became an infinite canvas, and your work just transformed from you doing one task at a time, to orchestrating dozens in parallel. Tell it what you want and a swarm of agents does the work with you at the helm.![](https://genaisecretsauce.com/content/images/icon/ph-favicon-brand-500-4d959642-f367-4e1f-a1d5-d43d4b3e20a9.png)Eric F Zeng and Alex Dakhli and Haylli WeintraubProduct Hunt![](https://genaisecretsauce.com/content/images/thumbnail/02560d10-1b66-46fb-8f51-4943e6b793da-8d1e77bd-76e3-47ed-9772-af2e589309d9.jpg)](https://www.producthunt.com/products/openswarm-3?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

Speech-to-speech model benchmarks on live phone calls.

🔥 **Upvotes:** 143 · 👤 **By:** Cekura
💰 **Pricing:** free · 🏷 **Category:** Developer tools

A public ranking of 11 voice AI models, each tested as a phone agent on 82 scenarios like clinic booking, three times each. GPT Realtime 2.1 was the most reliable of the voice-to-voice models, but an older chained setup (speech-to-text, then a text model, then a voice) beat them all. **Verdict:** Useful because it tests real calls and repeat reliability, but two scenario types from a company that sells voice-agent testing is a narrow base.

An AI on-call engineer for your Vercel apps.

It reads your Vercel deployments, logs and code, spots real problems, investigates the cause with evidence, and opens a proposed fix. It can also check new code changes for anything likely to break the live site. **Verdict:** A good fit for small teams with nobody on call, as long as a human reviews every fix before it goes live.

### [Tonefold](https://www.producthunt.com/products/tonefold?ref=genaisecretsauce.com)

Describe a song, get every part as editable MIDI.

🔥 **Upvotes:** 71 · 👤 **By:** VKFolio
💰 **Pricing:** free (open source) · 🏷 **Category:** Music

You describe a song to Claude, and chords, melody, bass and drums come back as editable notes in a piano roll rather than a finished audio file. A "producer agent" shows its plan and waits for approval before big changes. **Verdict:** A smart idea for musicians who want control, but it is early: no tempo changes or video sync yet, and the Mac version is not yet notarized by Apple.

Your AI agent's phone to dial, hold, and report back.

🔥 **Upvotes:** 68 · 👤 **By:** ClawCall
💰 **Pricing:** 30 free calls, then $4.99/month · 🏷 **Category:** Productivity

It lets ChatGPT, Claude or Grok make real phone calls for you: navigating phone menus, waiting on hold, talking to whoever answers and reporting back. It rings you before any decision and refuses to read out card numbers or one-time codes. **Verdict:** Handy for cancelling a gym membership or chasing quotes, but one early user said it called their dentist without warning, so consent settings matter.

[ClawCall: Your AI agent’s phone to dial, hold, and reports back | Product HuntClawCall makes real phone calls for you, from the AI you already use. ## An Empirical Study of Agent Skills' Downstream Utility

Yu Cheng, Dehai Zhao, Zhongxin Liu, Qing Huang, Zhenchang Xing, Xiaoxue Ren · arXiv:2610.08875

**What it claims:** Adding a relevant "skill" (an instruction file that teaches an AI agent a procedure) does not reliably make a coding agent better. Picking skills by whether they support the steps a task actually needs works better than picking them by topic.

**Key finding:** **The same skills helped some model-and-agent setups and hurt others on 36.78% of 87 benchmark tasks; choosing skills by required steps raised first-choice pass rates by 4.35 to 5.80 percentage points.**

**Why practitioners should care:** Skills are this week's hottest GitHub trend, and most people install them on trust. Test a skill with and without it on your own model and setup before adopting it, and spell out the order when combining several.
